Thanks for doing this Knotted

1973 turned out to be a super classic year, with all kinds of deserving albums falling out of my top 20. Here's what I went with:

Bohannon – Stop & Go
The O'Jays – Ship Ahoy
Lightnin' Rod – Hustlers Convention
Elia Y Elizabeth – ¡Alegria!
Ripple – Ripple
Ike & Tina Turner - Nutbush City Limits
Upsetters - Black Board Jungle
The Wailers - Burnin'
The Wailers - Catch A Fire

Correct answer at number one, and from Knotted's graphics it wasn't even close.

Not many duds in there either. Just the two Roxy Musics and one Steely Dan.

Stevie Wonder’s stupendous run of albums in the 1970’s was right up there with David Bowie’s and Joni Mitchell’s. For sheer creativity, diversity and range those three artists were almost unmatched in my opinion during that period. From the beginning of the decade right through towards the end they kept producing album after album that showcased just what brilliant, original artists they were. I’m glad Innervisions got top spot (even though I appreciate the competition was stiff).

How did I miss the Isley Brothers 3+3? That's a fantastic album.

War never seem to get the credit they deserve in my book, Great series of funk /soul albums , brief but rewarding period of collaboration with Eric Burdon and managed to put on a 50th Anniversary show last year. The 1973 album Deliver the Word is worth spin or two .

That's great. Wish it didn't have the organ though.
I was only familiar with the rock steady crew cover until today.

Sly Stone - Fresh
Burning Spear - Studio 1 presents
Stevie Wonder - Innervisions
Upsetters - Black board
Al Green + Call Me
Herbie Hancock + Head hunters
Kool and the Gang - Wild and Peaceful
Fela Kuti - Gentleman
Return to Forever - Light As a feather
Dr John - Right Place
John Martyn - Solid Air

Probably as strong a list of personal killer no filler albums as I've ever done

At different times in my life innversions and head hunters would've been dead certs for number 1 but I've rinsed them so hard I can't tell anymore. Fresh still sounds extra fresh though

So much innovation in this year across the board... Like knotted said for example Al Green might be easy to overlook but that album is carving out a whole new sound. That might seem commonplace now. Burning Spear likewise set a rasta roots foundation as did Lee Perry on the early dub tip. A golden year for sure.

Thanks as always one and all

I'd say the same for Gal Costa.

In hindsight, I could easily have had an "all Irish" top ten with this one. Ah well, maybe next time.
