Urban75’s lack of empathy for people who like The Lightning Seeds

i noticed my kid does this to suss if something is good or bad. Which is probably mapped to some internalised filing system.
Like Nirvana has alot of views - is automatically good.
New band has alot of views. Could be shit because [insert crime against humanity commited by the singer in an interview] or because the girl in her class she doesnt like likes it or because it is shit.
So I play her some of the Lucky you video above.
*Listens. Screws her face up.
"why do I need to hear this?"
*listens a bit more
"no.

Sounds boring."
The number of viewss is a gauge as to how popular a particular video is, not how good it is.

I recognised the name, but didn't think I'd heard any of their songs. Listened to the first couple here and for sure I don't want to hear any more again. Thank you.

ETA. That football one. I recognise that.

Please stop this thread

I was a bit tipsy when I started this thread two years ago  :D And ironically I don’t particularly have strong opinions of them and their music in the cold light of day

Anyway a few weeks ago, a mate offered me a ticket to see the Lightning Seeds with him in Bristol tonight.

So I will close the circle on this thread. Oh Lucky Me!

Shout for them to play Vindaloo

Back in 1980-blahblah when they were doing a world tour, my then-partner had some kind of family connection to Ian Broudie and took me to see them in London. Was nearly grinding my teeth with boredom by the halfway mark.

Some months later, I was in NY and got invited to something associated with my partner, and it turned out to be a group outing to a fabulous meal followed by a trip to see the fucking Lightening Seeds. They'd saved this information as a surprise, so I was trapped in a taxi when I discovered the dread truth.

I knew my face would betray my feelings so opted to step away from the group during the set. At about the same half-way point as my teeth had started to crumble at the London show, one of the people I knew from the group came over and shouted in my ear "You're being really rude! You're being miserable! Show some enthusiasm! What's the problem?"

On this invitation to share my views, and being at the limit of my tolerance, I couldn't help myself from shouting back "They're the worst band in the world right now!" and launched into what I recall as a fluent witty take down.

I was not invited to the aftershow.

I could quite happily never hear Three Lions ever again, but I don't mind a bit of Life Of Riley, or Change or Lucky You now and again.

I'm supposed to be seeing them in December. Not all that bothered about it, I saw them last year supporting Madness and they were fine but not exactly mind blowing entertainment. For me they're the occasional half decent pop tune that I don't mind hearing on radio 2 or something. That's about it.

I once endeared myself to about 10,000 fans of The Darkness by proclaiming them the worst band on the planet.

You can get away with that shit on the Internet. Said directly to the Reading Festival crowd who've just enjoyed them? Not so much.

I don't drink anymore and am consequently still alive.

Live blogging :p

Well one post anyway

The support band are called Casino. Definite influences from the Las and the Coral.

Also from Liverpool from the accents. We are speculating they are mates of the bands kids.

Gig report

Brodie has his pension in the form of football songs. Is he perhaps just a lucky busker who made it big. Life of Riley is better, my mate shouted to me “what a screamer from Le Tissier” during the chorus which made me chuckle

The low key energy of his songs matches his stature. Some of the new ones were ok but perhaps because they hadn’t become annoyingly over familiar.

I spotted all of the below to complete my I-Spy Britpop Haircuts book. Will be sending my book to big chief I spy for a merit badge

Next week… Ocean Colour Scene

Urban75's lack of empathy for ordinary people who remember Big In Japan :(

I remember them from a compilation album called To The Shores Of Lake Placid.

Curious to know if anyone else remembers this album, when I was about 20 I thought it was one of the best things I'd ever heard although it's fair to say Big In Japan were perhaps not the highlight.

TBF the intro to this is an absolute corker - the rest of the song, not so much.

I thought I'd seen them live but realise I was confusing them with Cast, which does not say a great deal about either band.

All their songs sound the same to me. Likeable enough. In with Oasis and Ocean Colour scene. It's not actually music. Bands + neoliberalism pursuits.

I always associate The Life of Riley with Matt Le Tissier purely because of how often he appeared in Goal of the Month when that song was the soundtrack.

Can also recommend Terry Hall's version of Sense. He and Broudie collaborated a fair few times.
