Recommendation Twitter Alternatives

Great paragraph in this look at what Bluesky has been like in the last week

And along with that came a surge of annoying accounts—writers for brand-name magazines, anonymous trolls on burners, a whole horde of people trained to be irritating online. Replies started to include race-baiting, MAGA taunting, self-righteous frothing about gender, or self-important demands for debate. The most obnoxious reactionaries, Musk's people, were simultaneously pitiable and repulsive: their twin conquests of Twitter and of American politics had done nothing to ease their misery or stop them from desperately trying to inflict misery on someone else. By any objective measure, they had owned the libs, yet the libs owned them.

Tell me what you think about how Palestine is dealt with on there. I haven't joined but a couple of mates said it is quite poor on that issue
It's true that a lot of Palestinian accounts asking for money got banned mostly I believe for spamming however this lady @mommunism.bsky.social has made it her business to advocate on their behalf and she chooses 1 account a day to promote as they have been vetted as genuine - somewhere there is an Excel spreadsheet of vetted accounts. i haven't seen it but I've seen people make reference to it. I've given a bit of money to some accounts but the only trouble with that it it seems that word gets around and you get a lot of Palestinian followers. More than you can realistically give money to without leaving yourself not so very well off.

With regard to BlueSky in general, there has been a huge influx of Twitter refugees over the past week or so and by using the Sky Follower Bridge extension in your browser of choice you can reacquire a great deal of the people your were following on Twitter. It has very much taken off.

Regional newspapers are now moving over to Bluesky.

Reductions in the number of monthly posts being allowed on X coupled with the rise of far-right content on the Elon Musk-owned platform has forced many publishers to re-examine their social media strategy.

Major newsbrands to join BlueSky in recent days include the Liverpool Echo, Manchester Evening News, Birmingham Live, Bolton News, Lancashire Telegraph, Sheffield Star, The Herald and The Scotsman. As well as corporate accounts many journalists on these and other titles have also opened accounts on the platform.

The Echo explained its thinking in an editorial penned by political editor Liam Thorpe and audience editor Paul Philbin, with both journalists citing “vile abuse” and “disinformation” on X among the reasons for the change.
Added Paul: “Following the aftermath of the tragic attacks in Southport in the summer, we saw a rise in referral traffic on the Echo from X. During the riots, we would see huge spikes in our audience. But, with that, came a lot of vile responses towards our reporters.

“We also saw a lot of disinformation and misinformation spreading like wildfire on X and and, personally, that was when I first felt we needed a new platform. So far the experience on Bluesky has been positive.”

The Sheffield Star said in an editorial: “Like many news organisations, including the Guardian, The Scotsman and others, The Star has joined BlueSky. The social networking site is growing rapidly as an alternative to Elon Musk’s X.

I’m enjoying Bluesky. It’s funny how some platforms just don’t have it. Threads has many times the users Bluesky has, but Threads is boring. I don’t know quite how they managed it, but it’s sterile. I never took to it.

It’s been pleasant to follow you, but I’m a bit worried about coriander becoming a divisive wedge issue that eventually turns Bluesky into as polarised a hellscape as X.

What's your handle? I can't find you on there

Well it seems a better business model than relying on advertising. I doubt they will be copying the X approach of boosting paid accounts.

Monetisation for creators implies income in addition to running costs and profit, so something somewhere will have to make money from users somehow. Very difficult to see how that is possible without advertising.

She said there had been pro Palestinian accounts banned . I don’t know as I’m not signed up .
It seems like there’s a lot of Palestine accounts asking for money and as a result many get hit by moderation and banning because they post little but fund raising requests

It’s a bit heavy handed on those accounts but I’ve otherwise seen plenty of pro Palestine accounts asking what the fuck Israel is doing

I'm not sure Bluesky is a long term alternative, it's not much of a step forward from Twitter and will probably get tired quite quickly.

Alternatives to BlueSky in the BlueSky universe.

I now use Graysky because it has a much better iPad app, without sacrificing any functionality.

And there is something called Clearsky which is useful if you want to see who is blocking whom, and in particular who is blocking oneself, which the Bluesky app keeps quiet about so as not to upset you.

I am only blocked by someone called Alextraterrestrial, but they seem to block everybody.

Here are the blocking scores on the doors for the Urbanites whose handles I could remember:

danny la rouge has upset three people, who presumably follow rival Zen schools and are triggered by any mention of Plum Village.
DaveCinzano has only made two enemies, whose handles are doubtless assumed covert identities.
spitfire is persona non grata with six Bluesky users, one of whom is a fan of anechoic chamber music.
Alarmingly, though, frogwoman’s predominately ladybird-related postings are blocked by 26 accounts! Perhaps they are all aphids. Or aphid enthusiasts.

That's interesting thanks, blocked by people I have never had an interaction with at all. Must try harder to upset the people I do know.

You can also see on Clearsky who - and how many - your blockers are blocking: oddsters who block absolutely everybody unknown who appears in their feed should be less upsetting than people who only block you.

I see now why I have been getting loads of SA followers, someone added me to a list of SA creatives.

I have never been to South Africa and I am not a creative. Their list is flawed, v. useful thanks Silas, I can take myself off it now.

Someone added me to a blocklist of people who don't like risqué art or something, no ideas as ive never mentioned it. did some digging and I'm quite comfortable with being blocked by them tbh. I think I also got on a block list because I follow a couple of people from twitter who rub people up the wrong way for some reason - including each other I think

Aphid Twitter is still a bit of a factor, though?
