Twitter/X discussion

I follow a bunch of niche topic accounts (cycling, city planning, architecture, spaceflight) plus some podcasters/artists/musicians etc. whose work I enjoy. My Following feed is lovely and my For You feed is mostly more of the same. When it's not I use the "not interested" thing to make it go away. Seems to work well.

EDIT: to be clear, this is on twitter, which is still where people are. I guess my principles aren't strong enough to leave just because the owner is such a flagrant asshole (as opposed to the more private assholery of Zuckerberg etc.).
The thing is, you are enabling Musk to incite racism by being on Twitter. You are acting as an unpaid content provider for an advertising platform. You are in effect financing Musk's racist rubbish. I was on X/Twitter until about a week ago. I spent the last couple of weeks on there encouraging people to leave it

I had a short-lived Twitter account and then a short-lived Mastodon account but this type of fast-moving social media just make feel down, maybe I don't know how to use it. It was embarrassing watching people "market themselves" and trying to get crumbs of attention from famous accounts, and the bite-sized nature of interactions made it hard to establish relationships, it was more like broadcasting to a crowd. Just cringey all-around.

I have never found it like that, but i've never tried to 'market myself' and tend to read more than i write on there.

twitter for me is / was combination of local / travel news, keeping up with some friends / acquaintances, following things like football team, some music artists, cat stuff, some london history accounts (although the ones that are dog-whistle 'look how it all used to be better before all those minorities were here' don't get followed, even if the pictures are nice.)

don't think i ever tried to get attention from 'famous accounts' - nearest i got was a very brief exchange with steven van zandt (e street band) when he was trying to understand football (as in soccer not that american nonsense) when the world cup was on.

i'm coming more and more to that conclusion.

don't think i've looked at it for a week or so. bit annoying that the local / travel info stuff isn't easy to get anywhere else (local bus company is good at putting any problems up on tweeter, as control room is staffed 24/7, but think that's the only real time updates they do.

i'm making an effort to go and look at a few blogs, rather than waiting for them to post on tweeter that they have done an update.

Yes, one of the positive things was that sometimes you could spur a company into responding to a complaint or query.

Bet they'll get a load of grief now!

A Welsh secondary school has said it is closing its account on X - formerly known as Twitter - over concerns about racism on the social media platform.

The head teacher of Ysgol Glantaf Gymraeg Glantaf in Cardiff said a decision was made by governors to "move away from the platform".

Matthew HT Evans also called for other organisations such as the Welsh government and school inspectors Estyn to consider long they continue to use the platform.

"During the hate riots in the summer, we were able to see young people and children on the streets who were drawn into the lies and racism that was going on, which was disturbing," he said.

"You were seeing comments that made you feel uncomfortable about the clear racism that was going on that platform," he said.
He also wondered if other organisations using X will follow suit.

"My feeling is you've got a large number of organisations that are on this platform – Estyn, Welsh government, county councils – and I think there's a question for them all to how long they're going to continue on this platform?" he said.

The Welsh government said it keeps the accounts it uses "under ongoing review."

"We recognise the concerns raised about the management of X in recent months, but believe it is important to continue to engage with as many people as possible and provide clear, trusted information.”
