Tram overturns in Croydon - several deaths reported [Nov 2016]

At the end of the day - the formal investigation will find out what happened - the RAIB are nothing but thorough in their investigations.

Terrible , terrible accident though ......and obvious thoughts to all affected in whatever capacity.

Empty trams are abandoned at various parts of the network. On my way back from East Croydon station about half an hour ago I saw police and workmen trying to help a lorry which had got stuck trying to get past one of the abandoned trams. There was a very long queue of traffic waiting for it to clear.

Arrest - on the highest feasible charge - seems to be standard practice if there's any doubt - same with driving.

Thoughts to anyone involved or their friends & family. Especially to those trapped all day. :(

'Arrested on suspicion of manslaughter' tells you nothing about the eventual charge or if there will be any charges at all. For example, if you are driving your car & a drunk falls in front of your car with no chance of you avoiding them & is killed, ie you are totally blameless you may still get arrested 'on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving' ie the police start with worst case scenario & work backwards. Same as if you stab a burglar to death in your house in self defence you will probably be arrested 'on suspicion of murder' but in both cases after investigation you would not face any charges. It is a common complaint that innocent people may spend months in this limbo while police investigate.

Shocking loss of death. Also seems very high for the kind of accident that's taken place. A derailment with no obvious violent crash against another tram or any other object, the vehicles themselves looking relatively intact on the outside... WTF happened?

Compare it to the much larger Virgin train derailment a few years ago, which involved many more passengers and presumably a far higher speed, and yet there was just one fatality.

Could it be the issue of standing?

I worked on a tv show where we got a propper computer crash test of commuters on a crowded train crashing at a relatively slow speed (20mph I think), something no train company did when they decided it was safe to increase standing capacity. The crash was a slow a d simple one but there were lots of injuries and at least two deaths. We took it to all the train companies who chose to ignore it, even though the number one crash test simulation company gave a quite damning report. The test would also have easily applied to a tram.

I would assume that the nature of a tram is that it is easier to move around than a train so people are more likely to be thrown about unfortunately.

I don't think that's the nature of trams, it's just the layout the croydon ones have. The layout does not need to be any different from a train or bus.
