Three injured in school stabbing in Wales (24/4/24)

A hero teacher "tried to restrain the girl with the knife" at the school stabbing in south-West Wales, his brother has said.

Darrel Campbell, who has been praised online, acted "instinctively" and did "what most people would have done when people's lives were under threat" said his brother, politician Cefin Campbell.

TBF the ambulance service across the whole UK is pretty fucked. It’s almost as if if you slash funding to an emergency service it doesn’t work as well anymore….

(Welsh volunteer first responders are the only ones in the UK allowed to carry and administer gas and air ( nitrous oxide) for pain relief given the even longer back up times there though…)
And much more fucked in the summer if you live in a holiday destination which has a significant population increase

Shifting hospitals is one thing, but the whole question of shifting Glangwili is so they can downgrade Withybush.

And the ambulance service around here is parlous as it is, with the increasing amounts of time ambulances spend shuttling between Carmarthen and the West...not to mention the not infrequent trips that end up being made to Morriston (even further East) and Cardiff.
I worked on the acute psychiatric unit at Bronglais for 5 years (Afallon). They closed it and moved it to Carmarthen unfortunately. And I moved to Canada.

Kid at my school pulled a knife yesterday. Nobody hurt and there was no apparent intent but it's not great.

The other kids who were there responded really well and did everything right, didn't escalate or try and intervene, just stayed calm and got help.

Today I've got kids in my class asking me, sir what should we do if you died while we were in a lesson. I improvised a pretty good response but the lesson was supposed to about wind turbines ffs.

With the utmost respect for my Welsh colleagues and knowing nothing of their particular school, after nearly four years working in schools, some with ridiculous behaviour policies in the Michaela mode, I'm surprised kids don't flip and start attacking people more often.

Yeah we're being forcibly trustified next year and it seems likely the new trust will bring in a bunch of insane Katherine Birbalsingh/Doug Lemov bullshit, that's where most of them seem to be at nowadays.

My current employers have been doing their best to outdo Lemov and Birbalsingh. Birbalsingh only gives you a 15 minute detention for missing a pen, it's an hour here. Luckily I have literally just given notice and hope to say goodbye to mainstream for good.

And while I see a lot of angry young kids being bullied by teachers trying to outdo Lemov and worry about the impact on them, I do know there were probably even more serious reasons behind this terrible incident.

Even Lemov says (or at least said in the 1st edition of TLAC) "just give them a pen".View attachment 422707
Lemov is not terrible all the time; a bit loud and American but his book on literacy is interesting and my daughter loves all that hand signal stuff when they do it at her primary school. The problem is SLT who've only read the chapter on behaviour.

This whole Massive Punishment For Pettifogging Crimes thing seems much more about visibly asserting power and control than instilling any kind of learning in pupils.
The biggest advantage for mullti academy trust leaders is that super-strict behaviour policies make it easy for poorly trained staff to establish control with the added bonus of encouraging difficult kids to fuck off.

Some of the schools round my way seem to be going for harry potterising the uniform with blazers and shit like that, to appear posh and traditional and appeal to reactionary parents. I’m hoping we’ll be immune to this being a primary. There’s a new head & deputy starting next year and currently in talks with a local trust about joining with them (currently stand-alone, but government wants all schools in trusts of around 20-25 schools over the next few years).

That’s a great summation.

It's been like that for a long time in a lot of the secondary schools round here (Hackney). Even down to some having specific shirts/school skirts that you need to buy from one supplier.

Nah. Lemov is terrible all the time. Even good suggested tips are ruined by being touched by the grifting hand of Lemov.

The damage this guy, and those hooking up with him, is doing is going to take years to undo.

You're probably right. It's just so ingrained in schools now.

It is except

most of the difficult kids don't get to make the choice. Exclusion is, year on year now, overused.

And that's a simple sentence but it does fucking matter. Kids lives are being if not ruined, then seriously disrupted by this policy. Years of their lives. I see it every day and it pisses me off.

Weren’t there targets, at one point , regarding numbers/% of exclusions ? If so what are the ways about getting round them ?

Various forms of offrolling. IMO some schools behaviour policies are indirect forms of offrolling by making it clear to parents that their kids won't be getting an education because they'll be in iso every day.

Officially, in mainstream? Not that I know of (prepared to be corrected). But surely, if there were, it would be to lower the exclusion rate. And this has not happened.

It's all about the league tables. And Ofsted (Estyn in Wales).

If so what are the ways about getting round them ?

Unofficially, or rather not stated in law but expected by education authorities, in a PRU (not mainstream) high exclusion stats will not look good to the education authorities or Estyn or whoever. Our old boss (Head) who was a complete wanker came up with (an idea he must have stolen off someone because he was too much of an idiot to think of it himself) half day exclusions. To half his rate. While still knowing half day meant full day because of transport issues if nothing else. And yes this works with the box tickers because the important number is days excluded, not pupils excluded.

not sure where you got that impression from , various places with 'level 3 or level 4' EFRs have them carrying entonox... it is an add-on to FREC3, but 'medical gasses' courses for First aiders have been around for 50 years

pled guilty

The teenager, who cannot be named because of her age, pleaded guilty to three counts of wounding with intent and of being in possession of a bladed article on school premises.
But she denied three counts of attempted murder at Swansea Crown Court on Monday and will stand trial in September.

A most distressing and traumatic incident for those who either witnessed it or were closely impacted by it.

It must be a relief for them that following it, they had no lynch mobs taking to the streets shouting "Enough Is Enough", "Save Our Kids" or "Stop The Boats" and no-one going on internet fora preoccupied with the "nationality" and "ethnicity" of the juvenile involved in these offences.

Hopefully, the trial due to commence on 30 September 2024 will get to the bottom of the incident.

Or not.

"A great irregularity" on the jury. Jury dismissed. Retrial in January which will be traumatic for everyone involved.

What's a 'great irregularity' do you reckon?

It seems one of the jury was ordered to stay behind. Assuming a difficult conversation ensued....
