Things to look out for in Lidl and Aldi

GodDamnit ! Bought a bottle of Pear spirit and a bottle of Plum spirit at Lidl yesterday and dislike both - should anyone like these and can pick up from Shepton Mallet before the end of the week, they're yours. I'll deliver within a reasonable distance.

It's Greek week at Lidl and you all NEED these

They are not a health food, but good grief are they lovely. Gooey, slightly cinnamony, slightly cocoa-y, all delicious.

Be warned, the ingredients say they are 55% syrup iirc. You'll eat the top ones and think "fuck, these are sticky" ... and then you'll get to the bottom layer, which are now sitting in a mm deep pool of the stuff.

Glorious.

I had the pitas with spinach and fennel, which I really quite liked. I don't understand how I hate licorice and aniseed, but I love fennel which I will admit tastes and smells a bit aniseed-y.

Relateable. Just degrees I guess, one is ANISEED!!! <Death metal growl>
The other is more subtle

These from Aldi are nice to have in freezer for 'when you can't be arsed to cook' moments. Nicely spiced crunchy coating, fairly chickeny texture.

Work well dipped in improvised home made raita.

I didn't make it to Lidl Greek Week in the end - probably a good thing, we always come out with more snack food/alcohol/fizzy pop than actual dinner stuff. Very easy to overdo it cos the individual items are quite cheap but when you get to the till and realise you've just bought 50 quids worth of junk food and nothing to make an entire actual meal, you start to question your life a bit.
Need to be more disciplined and plan my next trip there a bit more. And possibly go by myself, OH has problems with impulse control in the crisps and sweets aisle!

Could have done with a couple of bottles of retsina mind, it's loads better than the Kourtaki I can get in Sainsbury's, and a good price.

Can I just counter that with 'I've tried them and they were bloody horrible and the kids wouldn't eat them either'. I'm cutting down on meat and despite being a fussy eater no meat is a better option than fake meat.

Just my opinion, others may love them. My wife still gets the other one (the noodly non-coated strips) to cook with fried noodles.

Anyone had the full Peking duck from Aldi? Almost went for it as it had a 70% off stick on but I had duck at the weekend.

No, but i bought half a peri peri chicken thing from Aldi a few weeks ago. I didn't realise at the time, but it was vacuum wrapped so with a long sell by date. Im going to give a whirl this evening, but unpacking vacuum packed meat always puts me off it before i have even cooked it.

If you still have them, you could make lovely cocktails that would probably make them perfectly acceptable! Pear, for example, goes nicely with elderflower cordial, fizzy water and ice. Plum spirit is good in Sangria or a whole variety of martinis.

I acquired a £20 weather station in Lidl today. I hadn’t meant to naturally.

I have wanted one for the house but had intended to research them before just grabbing one into my trolley without even looking at what was included, and forgetting my wariness for getting electronic stuff from Lidl

Anyway I’ve set it up just now and it seems to be all sorted. I think it should be fine for my needs :)

We have the Lidl ones all the time and have had Aldi often enough to know they're identical. They are very nice though sometimes a little on the small side (also a half duck not a whole one and you only get 12 pancakes).

The mrs always complains that bechamel is easy enough to make, but yet will always use the Lidl one if it's around.

That’s the Lidl way isn’t it :D
I went in for literally two items, £60 later and a huge struggle with a self operating til that apparently was checking the weight added to the scale via dialup after every single item I was still relieved I managed to leave without having picked up the chiminea or fire pit since I am supposed to be making one out of a old tumbledrier drum, if I can get the damned thing apart.

Did notice some things were going through at prices that I was sure were not what they were listed at but I'd had enough by then. Done online shopping for so long I was not remotely prepared for fucking about trying to find things and people being in the way lol.
