Things to look out for in Lidl and Aldi

There is an Aldi not too far from me. so far I have only bought chocolate there, twice, a year apart. I do go to a local Lidl and over Christmas they did thermal tops for £4.99 ... I got the last one.

I like the fish in a bag from Lidl, easy to microwave, which itself is easy.

Can anyone suggest if Aldi/Lidi do a decent vodka? Kind of more towards the smoothness of a Grey Goose rather than the sharpness of a Smirnoff. Appreciate unlikely.

I'm guessing these are the candidates after actually using google!

Lidl's £13.99 vodka wins gold at the 2017 Drink Awards

Saint Gérmont Premium French Vodka

I got the Lidl one yesteday, obviously winning an award means they can bump up the price to £15.99, or maybe it's as someone else pointed out above that Lidl are sneaking their prices up considerably.

Anyway, it's nice, better than most of the stuff that's more expensive, but not quite up to Grey goose standards, but for £15.99 instead of £40 you can't complain.

All the supermarkets are increasing their prices, innit? That’s why inflation is 3%.

Exciting news for South Londoners. Aldi Streatham opens on Thursday.

End of my road too. Am wondering what delights it will bring, and if I'll no longer enjoy walking across the common to lidl...
We shall see :)

One thing to look out for is the shopper at the checkout who doesn’t understand why things are so cheap there (speedy turnover at tills being one of the main reasons) and, instead of paying and packing the goods in their trolley at the packing shelf (thus allowing the next customer to be served promptly), insists on packing everything at a snail’s pace before paying and holding everyone else up. I know this is a minor gripe but I’ve just got back from Aldi, having stood for what seemed like aeons in the queue, while just such a person decided she had the right to waste everyone’s time - not to mention the poor lass on the till who has to meet targets on how many items scanned per minute and then has to scan everyone else’s shopping even faster to make up for it. Just bloody selfish! If you want to do that sort of shit go to Waitrose. (Rant over...)

I've seen the till person actually carry the stuff over to the packing shelf to move said type person on before. It might be considered rude, but if it was me, it's what I'd also do.

I am going to lose my Aldi virginity today as the new one opened in Streatham yesterday and I am going to take a visit. I am more excited than I should be about this :D

Don't be put off if it's a shambles, often newly opened stores can't cope with immediate demand, staff not up to scratch, empty shelves, looking like a jumble sale, and the owners of 4x4s who can't park properly, that despite expressed anger about an Aldi being built in their town, will suddenly think it's the best thing ever.

Have a lovely time!
I got a really nice dog mat/blanket thing from there last week  (I mean Aldi generally, not the one in Streatham :D )

In my case, the lass on the till was very young and possibly didn’t feel confident enough to say something to this woman (who was giving everyone waiting the “stink eye”). A more experienced member of staff would have moved her on. Nothing rude about a polite explanation of the system :)

The tills in Lidl are the main problem with these stores, and although the self service tills are ridiculous in that even if your shopping is 0.1 gram over what it should be it will not let you continue, a lot of the blame is to do with people shopping there.

Quite often the self service tills will have malfunctioned and be taking card only, which seems to be a big problem for many people in the branches I shop at, in that they refuse to use them as they only want to pay in cash. Who doesn’t carry around a bank card these days? Cue stupid people putting through all their shopping and then realising its card only and causing delays, plus a big queue of people waiting to use the ones that do take cash, causing more delays.

Oh, and the 30% off sticker in Lidl, which doesn’t go through the till unless a worker manually does it for you.

Things to look out for in Lidl and Aldi - I went Aldi Streatham yesterday and looked out for Ms T and colacubes, alas no joy!
Otherwise they were well stocked (the only thing I saw was sold out was the full-fat Norpak, obviously very popular, had been on my shopping list, too) and it wasn't too busy.
No hideous self-service tills either - do Aldi have them at all? I've only seen them in Lidl so far.
Will visit again.

Is norpak their lurpak? If so the difference is their own brand one is made with palm oil. Or maybe that's the lidl version? Anyway was put off

It is, yes. Didn't know that about the palm oil, will check it out.

Eta:Had to google it straightaway (and resort to the daily mail to find the answer :(), Norpak = identical ingredients to Lurpak; Danpak, the Lidl version = full of palm oil.

I knew I'd seen it in one of them :(

How was it?

There's an Aldi in Anerley which I've been to once or twice but don't feel a need to make the journey. Nice Brie de Meaux was my main finding.

Yesterday there was no Total equivalent greek yoghurt in Aldi - gutted! I practically live on the damn stuff.
But I bought myself a pair of exercise tights and some Pilates socks instead. Decent quality, cheap as chips

My wife has introduced me to stracciatella yoghurt in big tubs from Lidl. I've always turned my nose up at chocolate yoghurt before but can't get enough of it now.

I've never seen scab tills in Aldi.

I've started a Monday Aldi veg soup/stew, for 7 quid I've got a massive pot of veg soup which sits on my hob all week, health and cheap
Veg is so cheap, but you have to prep it same day or it starts going down hill Abit quick

Won't it be getting a bit fruity by the end of the week? :hmm:

I go for their “Super 6” veg and work out the meals from there

(for those not familiar it’s 6 types of veg on special offer for that week - keeps changing)

We've been buying delux west country butter with sea salt crystals from Lidl. I rarely have butter but wolfie really likes this one.

Yep stock of Greek yogs seem to have been cut down on I think to fit in all the Christmas food. It’s been difficult to pick up for several weeks now.
