Things to look out for in Lidl and Aldi

I'm going to try avoiding buying christmas goodies. <snip>
Fair enough - I aim to get the venison when that comes around, the fake caviar for VP (I dislike it but he loves it), but I'm not too bothered with the rest.

It may have been mentioned before (maybe even by me....) but, if you want nice tomatoes, Lidl's baby plum tomatoes - in the diamond shape plastic container - are the tastiest I have found

I like venison and fake caviar but I guess we can have that anytime so long as Lidl have it in. It's more the cake stuff that I go overboard on but I'm better off without it.

Lidl have compressors for £80, plus with sand blaster and paint spray attachments. Anyone know if they are any good?
yes I bought one and eighty quid seems a very fair price given that the Aldi equivalent is a hundred and seventy.I have never owned a compressor before and in terms of mending ageing motor-vehicles its going to pay for itself reasonably quickly.Electric ones seem to be actually more practical they just turn on when the pressure drops then cut out.The gadgets that came with it all work and the only draw-back is that its a tad noisy in a small shed.Looks great too.

Out in the Costa's at the mo ...there are seemingly lidls and a!dis feckin everywhere. That's new..!

..sort of takes away the vague apprehension of retail idiocy I feel when out shopping......

Yep, they really are "Europe-wide" (including eastern Europe) nowadays, and it is great knowing that you'll get much the same products everywhere.

On the whole, no agree for Aldi. I use Belgian and Dutch ones for everyday shopping. Bread is totally different, sandwich meats are too. Belgian Aldi only sells UHT milk, Dutch one sells fresh milk. Yoghourt assortment is totally different between two countries too. Chocopasta is much nicer from Belgian Aldi :)

Lidl in Belgium sells lots of A-brands. If I want W5 own brand cream cleanser I have to buy it in Lidl Holland. Belgium Lidl only sells Jif  Bread is totally different too.

Only thing that Lidl is consistent on between the two countries (and the UK) is that non-food is pretty much the same but not necessarily so for Aldi.

The best thing about foreign Lidl's/Aldi's is that they are really quite different depending on the country. So lots and lots of cured meats in Spain, fancy cheese and croques monsieur in France etc.

Maybe, but if in France, who can resist shopping in Carrefour? For me, it's seventh Heaven!

Depends on the location. Some Carrefours are pretty nice, others are very much like a run-down Tesco. There's one outside Cleon, where my in-laws are, that's horrible. Dark, cluttered, lacking in fresh food...

It would appear that Lidl are stocking a tawny/white port from Saint Clair from years 1997 upwards - not really a tawny port drinker, but the phrase any old port in a storm will suffice - so I've "parked" in that port

However, what I've noticed does happen is ONE FUCKING BOTTLE of this appears to be being slipped into each store

Now this, for £9.99 is excellent - far too nice in fact and is very VERY drinkable - you have been warned - why they only have one bottle is a mystery to me - I'd set out today to the "big" Lidl to see if I could buy 12 bottles - but again, they only had one on the shelf

It was mentioned recently perhaps on this thread that they were stocking Sancerre at a similarly reasonable price.I got my arse down there double-quick but found none. You might be on to something there High Voltage

Last week Lidl had a wine bin-end promo where they reduced a lot of stuff to £3.99 a bottle including Champagne and some higher end wines but the staff instore forgot to label up the shelves [emoji848] I picked up the following for less than £100 (includes 8 bottles of champagne which is delicious btw) and so has taken care of Christmas and New Year drinking (and perhaps a bit before then if I get thirsty)

Cheap and ripe mango's this week at 59p. Also have the good eating pumpkins in again at 99p and winter squashes at 99p a key

I was talking to the cashout girl about pumpkin and squash recipes, and she put my 3kg crown prince squash through at the pumpkin price, saving me a couple quid

I can't believe we're in October and nobody's mentioned ........................

It's to draw you in innit. So you see other bargains and end up buying other produce. Supposedly at any rate.

I'm off to France in a few days and will stock up on Lidl's marrons glacés which usually retail at €5 for a box of 18. We don't have a Lidl near us so I don't know if they do them in the UK.
