The stupidity of the anti-vaxx nutcases

Dr John Campbell went heavily down the vit D and Ivermectin rabbitholes.
There was a meta (Cochrane ?) study where all the researchers were doctors actually using it. I skimmed the video and Campbell seemed a bit too keen.
I believe there is currently a proper randomised double blind study underway.
I think I heard recently the idea is it needs to be taken early _ quite likely before symptoms...

All this obsession to avoid using apparently the safest vaccines ever devised.

I don’t think you can compare vit D with ivermectin. One is well established as important to the immune system. The other one was mentioned by trump as being good for covid without any evidence.

More and more articles from all over about youngish anti vax people with no prior health issues dying of the covid.
This if it continues has got to change a lot of people’s minds, right?
I mean it doesn’t cost you anything to be a 9 11 truther or have strong feelings about the new world order etc but this choice to not get jabbed has actual consequences. Or will they just not believe the reports idk.

I think they're not comparing Vit D and ivermectin, I agree with what I think they were saying in that if someone's first words about the pandemic is to go on about Vit D etc, then that's a warning sign as to what they think about it more generally.

I find this encouraging.

I find it depressing and a sign of the bollocks people come out with that sounds reasonable but I really think isn't....

My wife has refused the vaccine and we get along fine. It's her body and her choice. I stopped discussing it weeks ago. She has caught it at least a couple of times so I am not unduly worried. It isn't her primary identity to be a vaccine denier thank God but she is still awaiting evidence it is safe and you can't really prove that in any case.

For example, the individualized 'her body her choice'. Well kind of, but not solely. Vaccination is also really importantly about collective protection for society (especially the vulnerable in it), so just making it about personal choice misses that point completely. Caught it at least a couple of times? She really thinks she's had covid 3 times or more? And she's awaiting evidence it's safe? What evidence is she waiting for? More than has been provided so far across the world in numerous studies? She's following the science journals closely for this is she? She's peer reviewed the evidence provided so far and has criticisms of it? But also "You can't really prove that in any case." What? so she's waiting for something you can't really prove anyway. Which is it, waiting for proof, or not waiting as it can't be proved?

That kind of shit is just nonsense I think. She may not be an 'anti-vaxxer' as such but she's been taken in by the stuff they come out with.

No, I didn't suggest that, but I do think the arguments he's said as justification are bollocks. No idea if he tried to persuade her, or just was like whatever. I'd be hard pressed not to lose respect for someone that came out with that level of nonsense tbh, but obviously (and luckily) we all have different ideas of what's acceptable or not in a relationship.

Of course the arguments are bollocks!
I've heard 'i'm just waiting for more data' a lot. It's what people say when they want to try to appear reasonable.
I think i'm just kind of exhausted, battle weary.

This is just so sad. Nothing funny about it at all imo.

I do have some sympathy for those that are vaccine hesitate, it starts running out in a case like this, where he persuaded others not to have the jab & put them at risk.

I have no sympathy whatsoever for those that have been active in spreading their bullshit as wide as possible.

Vitamin D is useful though, and has potential to be useful for covid. I'll try and dig out a long read article from the Graun on it, which summarised the research on it to date.

Nutrition is a bit of a wide field but like...surely it's not such a far out idea that we need vitamins and minerals to function well? Eat oranges, don't get scurvy, etc?

I'm not a fan of letting alt right loons get away with co-opting ideas and things which are useful and good.
Was only using vitamin d as an example. I. E if someone starts talking nutrition, any nutrition, I will be prepared for what follow. Nutrition is a well know pipeline to the rabbit hole. Obv not everyone who is into it goes thay way, but its all linked

he seems not stupid. He seems an example of how anyone can be taken in by this stuff.

Whenever I challenge people's information sources they often claim the fact-checking sites are biased ... so sad when there are channels run by bunches of actual scientists giving out their knowledge for free...

I do wonder though, as someone from an engineering background, whether I would have learned about DNA by myself by now - if I hadn't done the OU's science foundation course in 1987 - long before the Internet ... I did no biology at school ...

I think it was genuine concern. Not hard man internet points.
I also worry about people who regularly invite anger, anxiety, cortisol and adrenaline with their online habits. It's unhealthy.
There's an unfortunately big psychological payoff from it - trawling the internet for terrible people and being angry at them can feel like you're doing something active in the face of a complete lack of personal agency in one's life. But that's why Twitter is popular.

belatedly coming back to this.
I can't see facebook but were there really a lot of people posting hateful stuff to a dead man's page to celebrate the fact that he died of his mistake?

I'm finding this period, the furious division of it all the last couple of months or so, much worse, more depressing and scary than any of the lockdowns or the (hopefullly past) height of the pandemic.
