The stupidity of the anti-vaxx nutcases

'Alternative health' stuff is some gateway drug to this shit. Presumably she's into that partly due to a mistrust of medicine though? And sometimes it's related to feeling like the 'modern world' is a bit fucked up and alienated from, and destructive of, the natural world?
Yeah there is that. But i'm not going to be able to convince her that the modern world is in fact NOT a bit fucked up, if thats the underlying worry.

One thing that doesn't help at all is how all the different countries have different policies, like where she lives the current official advice is still for pregnant women not to get vaccinated, which is nuts.

She is vaccinated thank fuck, she agreed to have it because was worried about not being allowed in restaurants or something. If she wasn't i'd be going (much more) mental with this stuff.
Makes sense. I guess if covid ever blows over a bit then this stuff will also likely recede. She doesn't sound that's she's entertaining some of the real heavy shit

Yeah thats not what i want though. I don't think that would help at all.
She still sometimes asks my opinion, and listens to me. For instance ages ago she sent me the notorious 'plandemic' video and asked me what i think, and i was able to explain to her why it was wrong and dangerous.
Banishing them, sending them off to only talk to others in their orbit can't be the answer.
The point is that you are still talking to them about non-rabbit-hole things. So there's engagement, but it's conditional on what they want to bang on about. But yes - I appreciate that what I might feel OK with doing won't feel OK for other people.

As coronavirus infections rage among the unvaccinated, those suspicious of the shot are championing a new supposed COVID-19 cure. Thanks to a dubious study of ivermectin, a drug used in humans to treat parasites like scabies, cranks have seized on the drug as the new solution to coronavirus prevention and treatment.

Devotees have besieged pharmacists with prescriptions from shady online prescribers, forcing pharmacies to crack down and treat the antiparasitic drugs like opioids. As human-approved ivermectin prescriptions have been harder to come by, enthusiasts have taken to raiding rural tractor supply stores in search of ivermectin horse paste (packed with “apple flavor!”) and weighed the benefits of taking ivermectin “sheep drench” and a noromectin “injection for swine and cattle.”

“There is certainly a noticeable increase in calls to poison centers regarding ivermectin being misused,” a Texas-based poison control specialist, who requested anonymity due to concerns of repercussions, told The Daily Beast via email. “It’s clear that a vast majority are associated with a belief that it will prevent or treat COVID. That said, I do want to be careful not to be sensational—there’s no epidemic of ivermectin overdoses in hospitals, but it’s needless suffering given the lack of conclusive evidence of a benefit.”

Some interesting pipe lines to this stuff I have picked up: "spirituality" (not so much the dry buddhist/adviata stuff, it seems), yoga, wellness, nutrition, rave culture, fitness, alt right shit, and of course trump/qanon.

We don't write this stuff about right wing rabbit holes/pipelines. Oh shit, he's disappeared down the smaller state/Conservative social values pipeline. Oh no, he's started reading about trickle down economics and the importance of the family in society!

It feels so weirdly different. To me next time someone starts mentioning even say vitamin D or nutrition, I'm gonna be listening carefully. Esp if it's a dating situation. If they start coming out with right wing stuff? Ive been around right wingers in various shapes, forms, levels of friendship all my life. Couldnt probably date one, but my lot have always been a mix of right and left. Unless they are flat out racist, to be honest, I can get by with them just fine. But hillary eats babies just a bit further along the line from vitamin D is good for covid... Its something else! I should have swiped left!

It’s mad isn’t it. All that ‘alternative spirituality’ used to be fairly harmless (unless someone was foregoing conventional cancer treatments in favour of apricot pips or whatever). At worst, its advocates were just boring hippies - but now it’s a potential red flag!

Yeah. I've been wondering just lately whether i am now totally sucked into the extremism / culture war myself because for me i could not now date anyone who was refusing the vaccine (for non medical reasons obvs), and a few old and once valued friendships will not be repaired after this debacle i'm just not interested any more. thats fairly extreme too maybe.

No its a huge red flag. "Global scientific consensus. Studied by the best minds in multiple fields? Research funded by billions. Reports from humanity about losing loved obes/having it themselves.

Paaahh. Fuck all that - I know the real truth. "

Thats a massive red flag. Friendships, dating and otherwise.

i do agree. Hadnt quite seen it as simply as that before, the sheer arrogance of it all. Very not attractive.

That's not just conspiracy theorists though - you could say similar for fundamentalist christians. Wouldn't be able to date one but friendship's not out of the question for me as long as they don't keep going on about it.

oh god, this invemectin came up on the yoga whatsapp group months ago one of the loons going on about how it was the Answer but They dont want you know.

That one is particularly special as that stuff is presumably a Big Pharma tested and licensed drug. So 'they' want you to buy it off them for scabies or whatever, but definitely not for Covid. For some reason.

ETA: Produced by Merck who discontinued their vaccine trials. Probably decided it wasn't worth vaccinating against scabies or something.

Yes, I too have felt myself adopt a more hardline position towards anti-vaxxers than I would previously have done with, say, 9/11 truthers. With the latter I could just politely discuss and disagree but with the pro-virus lot I feel a visceral loathing …
I guess partly because their nutty theories have real-world impact on other people’s lives (and deaths), and partly cos their absurdly privileged imagined victimhood (inability to enter a nightclub = the Holocaust) is nauseating.

I could go out with or be friends with a 9/11 truther, I reckon (as long as they didn’t go on about it all the time, and if we both accepted we held different views on the matter so best avoided as a subject for debate).
But not an anti-vaxxer, no way.

My wife has refused the vaccine and we get along fine. It's her body and her choice. I stopped discussing it weeks ago. She has caught it at least a couple of times so I am not unduly worried. It isn't her primary identity to be a vaccine denier thank God but she is still awaiting evidence it is safe and you can't really prove that in any case.

I find this encouraging.

that is different to the evangelising zealots who are the ones I put in the anti vaxxer category.
I have stopped engaging with the people I know who seem to fall down that route as I know I won't keep my calm, as I only see it online it's pretty easy for me to just make a mental note of who they are.

Vitamin D is useful though, and has potential to be useful for covid. I'll try and dig out a long read article from the Graun on it, which summarised the research on it to date.

Nutrition is a bit of a wide field but like...surely it's not such a far out idea that we need vitamins and minerals to function well? Eat oranges, don't get scurvy, etc?

I'm not a fan of letting alt right loons get away with co-opting ideas and things which are useful and good.

Vitamin D, vitamin B-12 - All are offered as supplements to add to you good health.
You should be making sure your levels are sufficient.

This has nothing to do with covid, and more for your health in general.

Acknowledging that this is true does not support the anti-vaxxers any more that saying oxygen is a good thing.

I used to work in a veterinary pharmaceutical company and we sold Ivermectin by the shit load to companies all around the world. So when I first heard about this ‘wonder drug’ to fight COVID-19 I was like ‘that shit we used to make for cows?’

I’ve also heard people say ‘big pharma’ is suppressing Ivermectin to protect profits when pharma companies make millions selling it already. You really have to fucking despair sometimes.
