The stupidity of the anti-vaxx nutcases

No one's forcing them anyway. They can still refuse to have it just because they're a selfish prick if they want.
This is absolutely true isn't it, there's a very strange volunteer martyrdom about the whole thing, wouldn't surprise me if John Eyers is already being held as some latter-day Jesus in some very odd circles.

BigMoaner — do yourself a favour and stop reading the conspiracists’ social media pages. Once you completely ignore them, life is a lot better. It’s not like they have any power or influence to actually achieve anything.

Maybe they don't have that power or influence just yet, in this country. I don't know if you've noticed, but the QAnon lot have started getting local political candidates into office. The Republicans already court them to a good extent.

I think it's all too easy for a lot of scientific and academic types to dismiss the tinfoil brigade, because as a group they're so used to employing ordered and critical thinking that they can't intuitively grasp the conspiracist worldview. I would hope that since a reality TV star was elected to become one of the most corrupt and obviously unfit political leaders in recent history, that such ostensibly smart people would stop grievously underestimating the power of stupid things in large numbers.

I don’t think any of that is going to be helped by BigMoaner winding himself up by surfing their social media feeds

Yes. Have you? My impression from BigMoaner is one of baffled frustration, not the distress of emotional self-harm.
He’s spending the small hours of the morning making repeated posts of alarm about what he’s reading. That’s no way to keep yourself healthy. Nothing is going to be helped by it. QAnon is not going to be stopped by BigMoaner working himself into a 1am panic.

Similar things could be said for a lot of postings on this forum, but for some reason I don't see anyone telling anyone else not to make posts bashing the Tories.

Not exactly donated - Once detached, they are considered medical waste and so long as they are disposed of properly ie in line with the Human Tissues Act and Carriage of Dangerous Goods Act, or used "suitably" eg in medical research, which can include sale to drug companies, hospitals have pretty-much free-reign to do what they like with them.

Some of the worst excesses of this trade were clamped down on a few years back, at least in NHS Scotland - notably the sale of placentas to high-end cosmetic companies for "anti ageing" products, a trade that for placentas alone could bring-in a 6/7 figure sum annually for hospitals with busy maternity units.

Inferring from your use of “worst excesses” that you consider this (the sale of waste body parts) to be a bad thing; why? As you say it could bring in decent sums of money for hospitals. Seems a sensible and moral thing to do?

Try being more convincing next time.
It’s sweet that you are solipsistic enough to think that it is you that I have any interest in convincing. You can think and believe what you want — it’s totally irrelevant either way.

I get what your saying. I onky really give these folks thought when I read these threads. I had my best mate disappear down the rabbit hole, loose all his mates, and turn very poisonous, very quick. It was bizarre in the 3xtreme, so I have some emotional skin in the game.

But noxion is right. Its bafflement and little more that keeps me posting about them, they occupy very little of my thoughts.

I would say your claim that they are harmless idiots with no power not true tho. I think they have wraught a fair amount of damage and deaths since covid began. I think misinformation when it manifests like this is something people should be aware of. Wacko theories have always been around but this looks and feels different.

Possibly ... but Qanon and similar movements aren't going to be stopped by ignoring them/claiming they have no power/influence, either.

And am sure there are quite a few on urban who are alarmed (not just with the conspiracy theorists), but other events/movements happening across the world. Real events that affect their lives. That (out of desperation? Frustration?) causes them to question every incident/narrative.

Overall, it's not a great time for mental health and (getting back to the conspiracy theorists) maybe there are those movements who capitalise on it. A cult of hysteria, if you like.

Get what you're saying about keeping distance and getting persepective, of course. But when it's all around you, (or you feel it's all around you) it can be difficult to remove yourself.

Indeed, but when it’s all around you and affecting you personally, that’s precisely when it’s helpful to be reminded that there is a need to keep distance and perspective.

Not always easy when a poster is living through real (and threatening) events that impact on their lives, but sure. Not talking about this thread, in particular.

As for stuff you can distance from? Well, had to extricate this self from (sections of) the online international "community" in this region when it reached peak CT/Trumpist/Wumao/troll/racist levels. Feel a lot better for it.

In general, I don’t have any great issue with the use of clinical waste in the medical/scientific context and for some treatments eg skin for grafting (although skin/organs/corneas etc are all handled under the organ donation scheme, not commercial contracts), it’s an essential process but on the commercial side, the rather underhand way they went about it was a big part of the issue, along with issues over the lack of information (sometimes outright denial) and potential matters of consent from the patients involved and way the contracts with (particularly) the cosmetic companies were handled. There was also an issue over title and access to the waste.

The whole issue has had a major overhaul since then - at least in Scotland, so it is much less of an issue these days and commercial/medical “harvesting“ is far better handled and does still provide a good income stream for participating hospitals.

so the british lunatic in singapore has been sent for a mental helth evaluation no surprise that he is a Freeman of the land, choice quotes:

"He added that he was "wide awake", "enlightened" and researched "everything" but believes nothing."

"He asked if the prosecutor had seen his "sovereign ID", adding that he felt like "a PhD law lecturer dealing with a GCE law student".

"He added that he understood the law "better than anyone you've ever dealt with before" and demanded to be released and sent back to England with his family, "and let's not have a big fuss and scene over this".

definitely gone off the edge

Give me strength !

I've just be told by a anti-masker/vaxxer that us sheeple that have already got our jabs are responsible for the variants developing and spreading ! I need to take off my mask.
And that covid is no worse than a bad cold so we've given up our freedoms and lived in fear for the past year and a half for the benefit of the deep state.

come again, mate, that wasn't clear ...
Bollocks, was my succinct and erudite reply.

[I may be complaining to his employer, if I get the same reaction when I go in there for some info tomorrow[]

The defendant's "lawyer" :D :
Mr Abdul Rashid said that he is not, but that he is an "ambassador at large and advocate of Kingdom Filipina Hacienda", and that he was there to defend his "sovereign compatriot".
and the defendant:
He claimed that the police "kidnapped and abducted" him on his daughter's birthday, arresting him a second time at his hotel.

"I hid in the bathroom and I said — I do not consent, I do not comply. They dragged me out of the shower and handcuffed me.

Interesting though - does indeed act insanely which isn't a good idea in a court of law - they're very unforgiving.

Fottlers aren't insane. They're either con-men or the desperate marks whom they've managed to convince.

this. just yesterday i saw a blockheaded comment (elsewhere) to the effect that COVID-conspiracy types just haven't heard the right information. as if it's not available every day all over the place.

all you need is an audience. as long as you have a group that you know will accept what you say, you can say anything. this is basic rhetoric (the pathos part).

I think I'd take any info I get from that place with a wee bit of skepticism.

This is brilliant, I have a feeling that the people clapping and applauding in the court weren't there to support him but to watch the spectacle

My favourite bit is 'I do not consent, I do not comply. They dragged me out of the shower and handcuffed me'

Youngest Q tells us that someone has told her apparently in all seriousness that the vaccine will turn her eyes blue which is a new one on me. Youngest told this woman that Middle (a nurse) was vaccinated before Xmas and that Middle's eyes (like Youngest's) are still brown and asked how long it would take.
