Contrary to what some think he was and is a bit of a revolutionary within the church...he is hated within the hierarchy of the church especially the vatican, for not being conservative enough for them. Many conservative priests dislike him...and some absolutely hate him because he has listened to people.. allows communion for divorcees and has openly stated he does not and will not judge gays.

Should also say that the "conservatives" in the Catholic church are very much in Italy/ the Vatican the US and to some extent the UK.

Francis has named shitloads of new cardinals from anywhere but Italy as a way to try to ensure the next pope will not be a conservative and in an effort to try to effect change within the vatican.

Anyhoo. I don't wish the man any ill will. His predecessors were responsible for not dealing forcefully with pedophile priests. John Paul 2 who was essentially a nice man did not manage to sort the pedophiles. The Vatican has stymied moves to change things and deal with pedophile priests properly. It's like the mafia. Its one of the reasons why Francis refused to live in the Vatican preferring his flat outside the vatican which he shares with his cats.
