The Orville - Seth Mcfarlane's Star Trek/Galaxy Quest spoof (Torrent/Streamers Thread)

There's a part of my head that thinks its awful, but the rest of the brain is telling that bit to shut up and enjoy the very enjoyable show.

It really is like someone decided to make more TNG with different characters. Seth's obvious love for it is infectious.

I enjoy it, it isn't a comedy per se but has a much lighter tone to it than Star Trek Discovery for example.
McFarlane has admitted to being a massive Star Trek fan and it shows.

The reason for its low ratings in America was that the series was promoted by Fox- without MacFarlane's approval- as a purely comedy vehicle. Of course it is nothing like that. So many of those expecting Family Guy in space were left disappointed, and those who don't like Family Guy humour gave it a miss altogether.

Personally I love it. Season 2 in particular has been fucking superb, much better than S2 of Discovery imo.

Torrentz.

Indeed but it’s not great news for the show overall. The comments in that post alone show people are unwilling to pay for another subscription service for one show. Assuming people follow through with that the show is pretty much condemned that season 3 will be its final season.

Bump. S3 solid er... 17 minutes in. I've a few bevvies so don't expect some kind of coherent opinion. Probably better than Obi-Wan.

Won't this mean it's all Disney plus in the UK? Disney seems to have Fox and Hulu shows.
Yes it is! First two episodes out, and very solid ones. They’re a bit more tilted more towards drama than comedy in this season, though you can still expect the odd sporadic joke. The visual effects of the various spacecraft appear to have gone up a notch or two as well. First episode of S3 is a cracker imo.

The 'jokes' were always by far the worst thing about it. It's an expensive fan love letter to star trek, but I don't mind a couple of light jokes in there. I certainly out treks anything that has been on TV or film since the 90s.
I'm no star trek fan boy by the way, but the orville does seem to have tapped into what 'really' made it a decent viewing experience (for the most part). First one I couldn't handle was Enterprise, I only managed two or three Discoveries and one Picard. Films have been mostly trash (though the first reboot was actually okish? as I recall).
Side note, the most 'star trek' think start trek has done in it's modern form are the 15 minute side 'bonus' stories that were on netflix as extras (I assumed they were on line promotional things?).

I enjoyed the body horror stuff in ep 2, proper sci-fi trope that.

Having said all of that, I really enjoyed certain comedic aspects of the series. I think it works best when an entire episode is designated as a light relief one, rather than inserting jokes into a drama-themes episode. As an example, the episodes featuring Rob Lowe are completely goofy and yet totally enjoyable.

Bloody superb episode this week (S3 ep 4). One of the very best across all seasons, and cleverly building on the pre-existing story arc.

Even with my MacFarlane fandom chip switched off I would still say this is now markedly better than Picard or the latter ST Discovery seasons- or more enjoyable at the very least, which in a way is all that should matter in my book.

We love The Orville here but this series has been a letdown. Without the humour It's just another Star trek and there's plenty of that sort of stuff on tv. Might as well watch Strange new worlds,

My son (9) prefers the Orville over any iteration of Star Trek I've shown him. I think it's the lighthearted atmosphere, ST is many things but 'lighthearted' it definitely isn't. For me, I concur that this show is better than anything ST-branded since early Voyager (or the first 'reboot' ST movie, which i thought was pretty good).

Looking forward to getting into S3 of this, I really enjoyed S1 and 2.

Still can't get into it. It feels like a show for middle aged blokes who can't quite get over that the franchise has changed for the better since the 90s.

It's not that it's bad... just retro. Maybe will try to watch more, see if it turns it up a bit.

I'm not sure I remember any blue aliens in heat causing the entire crew of a ship to start shagging like rabbits in any of the Start Trek classic series I've seen, though... :p

Another strong episode in the sixth instalment of this season. This series has become as thought-provoking and moral/ philosophical dilemma heavy as vintage Star Trek NG. And clever story arc development from previous seasons.

It may be the best guest star cameo appearance of ALL TIME.
FTFY :p

I remember us introducing a friend to The Orville last year during a long weekend at ours. He loved it, and in particular the first episode that featured said guest star. As he rightly put it, ‘never in my life I thought I would see a space battle to the tune of Nine to Five, even less so that it actually works so well’ :D

This weeks episode is particularly good and puts most recent Star Trek films to shame. I assumed it was the last episode. But no. Still more to come this season.

Every single episode in this season has been for me no less than very good indeed. I don’t know if new writing talent has joined the creative team, but as you rightly say, this is now regularly out-trekking Star Trek.

Also, this is the most un-MacFarlane thing he has ever done, particularly in this third season. Incorporating a highly commendable pro-equality, anti bigotry message on every storyline, and all but abandoning his usual trademark of mostly gross comedy driven products.

The running times in S3 are longer as well, clocking up 75 odd minutes without breaks, which is extremely unusual for American TV series. And yet they don’t feel too long.
