The Orville - Seth Mcfarlane's Star Trek/Galaxy Quest spoof (Torrent/Streamers Thread)

Could really do with a bit more conflict. It’s all a bit Like those TNG episodes that are ok but you’d never include in your top episodes.

I don’t think you can expect conflict to ever feature heavily in this series, but at least it does not shy away from uncomfortable decisions or unhappy outcomes. The body count of civilians is fairly high. Remember early in this series when a small colony on a collapsing planet has to pick who will be flown to safety and who left behind to die due to the lack of space for everyone? In Star Trek you could bet on Picard & co coming up with a solution at the last moment and save everyone one.

And one or two episodes were very very good and memorable for me. The one about Bortus and his partner giving birth to a girl within the male-only species and going to trial against their own kind trying to stop the mandatory sex change their people perform in such occurrences was moving, superbly written and thought provoking.

The one about the planet where you get judged and even lobotomised if you get too many downvotes was also highly enjoyable- though it could be argued the story was, er, somewhat inspired by the equivalent Black Mirror episode.

I don't like to just diss things but I watched this today and it's not very good.

I could handle the cheap production, rubbish effects and acting if the storyline was at least engaging. But that was only one episode to be fair.

It's nowhere near current standards and expectations.

Watched the first 2 eps of The Orville a few weeks back and enjoyed it but it's a shameful ripoff, sorry, loving hommage to the Star Trek 80s/90s output. I don't believe it's going for the more grittier vibe of, say, BSG or The Expanse...

Is anyone still watching this. Last episode (identity part one) was kind of horrific. And shocking.

This series is getting better and better and really seems to be coming into its own.

I'm actually enjoying this season more than Discovery. Can't wait for the next episode.
I really liked Isaac and am so disappointed. I guess I projected my own humanity on to him! Much like the entire crew of the orville.

I hope he finds redemption. I guess that's a big ask? I guess the union will have to find allegiances elsewhere. The Krill perhaps? Enemy's enemy and that.

Oh oh, I just spoiled for myself. I thought you were on UK-release dates. This has not been shown in the UK yet, right? I'm pretty sure I watched last week's episode, and it was not about the character you mention.

It's really very very good. I thought it was going to be very goofy, but they balance the comedy with real drama. I'm enjoying it very much.

Its good, I have not seen the latest one either, but so far of the new series bortus and the holodeck porn killed me. Also Isaac with the Doc

Same here. I’m a bit biased because AFAIAC the Sun shines out of Seth MacFarlane’s arse, but I genuinely think it is very decent.

Anyone dismissing it out of hand and not giving it a chance solely because the premise is almost a carbon copy of Star Trek is missing the point IMO. This is not a cynical rip off made by unscrupulous people who lack any creativity and are only aiming to make a quick buck.

MacFarlane has has created this as a thoughtful piece of fan fiction. He’s a massive fan of ST and wants to pay homage to it, and have as much fun and enjoyment with it as he can while he’s at it. A world apart from the shameless made-for-TV rip-off films that the likes of the SciFi Channel come up with regularity on the back of successful blockbusters.

More importantly, it is well written and clever. Like FabricLiveBaby! , I am also enjoying this more than S2 of ST Discovery.

Wow... that was simply superb! And a massive, massive twist in the narrative. Never saw that coming.

As well as the plot being great, I thought the episode was really well produced. Beautiful cinematography at times, pretty decent visual effects, and more than one nod to various sci-fi classics. In particular with the music score. I heard hints of Alien, Star Wars and even Independence Day there.

ETA: I’ve much enjoyed both series equally, but there is a very different feel and mood to this one. It has come of age.

Also, S1 had guest directors for every episode (many of them Star Trek actors and writers), but I’ve just checked and MacFarlane has directed every ep in S2. A good move imo.

As for tonight’s episode, I have a feeling that
Isaac was messed up by his people when he was being rebooted. He might have lacked emotions, but he wasn’t that much of a prick before.

Without giving anything away, does part two do justice to part one? I'm still digesting how absurdly good and enjoyable part one was.

It’s more conflict driven so not as deep, but you should enjoy it.
Finally arrived here. Yes, agree. A very worthy conclusion. I’m sure I will not have been the only one to have guessed how the general storyline was going to develop, but it wasn’t an issue for me.

I was wrong in an earlier post when I said MacFarlene was directing the S2 episodes (damn you IMDB). Other people were as well, but this double ep was the first in this series by Jon Cassar, and he’s certainly taken it to a new level. It’ll be interesting to see what direction the next episode takes.

this episode kinda reminded me of the wounded from TNG

Can’t remember exactly which TNG ep you’re referring to, but the general theme has certainly been used extensively.

Good episode, though not quite on the same level as the two-parter last week, which might well turn up to be the show’s high water mark.

It's so much better than the utter pile of horseshit that is Star Trek Discovery. "Time Crystals" should be some comedy piss take of crappy lazy scriptwriting Not in *actual* Star Trek.

:(
Never mind Discovery. The philosophical quandaries presented in some of the episodes in this have been as good and thought-provoking as any offered by even the likes of The Next Generation.

Ep 3 of S1, About a Girl, in which Bortus and his husband argue about whether to comply with their all-male species’ laws requiring their rare female-born child must undergo a sex change procedure, was fantastically good and worthy of Picard himself.

Just binged the last 3 episodes including the season finale.

Question now is, does it get renewed. We know FOX have no problem cancelling programs that have a bit of a cult following, and even cancel them when they end on a cliffhanger. I;d say looking at ratings Season 2 attracted on average half a million less viewers than season 1, and the last 2 episodes have took a significant drop, but American tv figures are always weird anyway depending on what else is going on such as basketball or football, even college league games get massive figures.

We know FOX already need to find a space for potentially 3 hours of Wrestling from October after out bidding USA Network for WWE Smackdown, so no doubt some series are going to get moved days and something needs to be cancelled. Does Orville have enough of a following to get picked up elsewhere? Probably not. Interesting few weeks ahead for TV land, I guess we'll find out more when a lot of networks start doing their 'upfronts' in a few weeks (basically saying what's coming in order to sell advertising space)

Just watched the final episode. Another very strong, enjoyable one. It didn't feel like a finale at all, but whereas it feels odd at first that there were no cliffhangers, that's not a bad thing. Far too many series end a season with massive cliffhangers written in solely in the hope to force the studio to renew the series. Credit to MacFarlane for refusing to use such devices if he clearly felt the storyline didn't need them.

Interesting to see the cameo appearance of
Alara. Whatever the reason for her seemly abrupt departure earlier in the series, clearly a big falling out with MacFarlene cannot have been it if she agreed to appear here

I do fucking hope it gets renewed. Season two has been simply superb.

Halston Sage had a prior commitment for a movie (before The Orville had been greenlit for a second series), so they wrote the season around her absence.
