A useful analogy, I find, is that of a denial of service attack.

In a DoS attack the server takes time to figure out what to do with each deliberately broken packet sent to it. Send enough broken packets, which are easily and cheaply generated by a botnet, and the server becomes unavailable.

Me too - I don't think I've come across any yet but then again how would you know? Surely their biases must affect what they teach - if they're willing to put their reputations at risk by publishing that crap they'll surely be willing to use their privileged positions to indoctrinate students.

Being an academic is no guard against being an incompetent fuckwit! This is especially true of those who publish outside their own field, but I've seen shocking stuff published by very competent authors simply because it's the conclusion the customer was paying for (the inevitable consequence of privatising research funding). If you can manipulate your skills for money, you can sure as hell manipulate them to make dodgy arguments that attract you as an individual.

But he's not a welfare cheat: he's disabled. He can't live any other way. He has no choice.
