The Great Blanket of 2008 thread

hehe.

I'll probably get to about 35

then stop and not do anymore until the week before we are supposed to be swapping and turn up 8 short. at least that's in line with my usual form

I haven't picked up needles for at least 6 weeks now!! I need to get moving!

As for the 29th at mine with plant fest etc - that'd be great except that I inadvertently double-booked myself to go on a London-Brighton training ride (only as far as Richmond Park and back) with Han.. I'm sure Han won't mind if I postpone though - just off to check - will be right back!!

:)

20.

and I hope the 29th is ok. I'll have a busy weekend, but seeing as it seems to be the only weekend in ages himself's had off where anyone else has any time, i was rather looking forward to it.

ok.

the maths goes like this....

in garter stitch, the width of 2 rows is almost equal to one stitch. in stocking stitch, 2 rows is equal to about 1.4 times the width of each stitch. so bias or mitred squares with a 1 stitch per row increase have to be garter to be square. A few rows of stocking stitch won't do much, that will block out, but too much, gives you diamonds, yeah.

I've got a garter stitch bias with a raised leaf in one corner that looks good.
That makes as much sense to me as some of the stuff on the software forum :(

One day - one far off, glorious day - I will knit socks

you don't need to understand stuff like that to follow a pattern, it just comes in handy if you are absolutely incapable of knitting any pattern as it is written, you need to know what you can alter and what you can't.

I need to go cheap wool hunting - I've pretty much run out of yarn I can use for this. I had a much bigger stash of leftovers but when I was moving house last year cleared it out and gave to a friend for a this kids play scheme she was involved in.

Same here, otherwise all my squares will be the same colours... someone mentioned charity shops having wool, so might keep my eye out. Will have a look next time I pop up to see my mum (pretty sure wool's cheaper up there :)).

I've not heard back from Han but i'm sure she'll be fine with it - it was something we were going to do after the allotment anyway. I think we can assume it's ok to do Brockwell Greenhouses/craft club at mine on Sunday. :)

What time do you guys want to meet? 1pm at the Greenhouses maybe - or 1pm at the cafe for tea - then to the greenhouses, then to mine. Or do you want to meet at mine, dump your stuff and then go to the greenhouses?

So many options... :D

34 squares.

Found a lot more yarn in the stash that will do well for this. Don't think I'll need to buy any yarn at all.

They do!

There's some lovely textured patterns in some of those - I need some tips for those; all the ones I made in the past were stripey ones, but I've got a couple of balls of wool that don't really go with any others colour-wise so I have to get some texture into my unicoloured ones.

ok, things i've done include

3 rows on knit side foward, 3 rows of purl side foward,

knitting one stitch in the middle of every purl row so you get a ridge down the middle

doing a row of purl, a row of k2tog, yo. a row of purl a couple of times. I was thinking about threading some ribbon through the yo's. I've got a pattern for a bias knit square with a leaf on one edge that i'm going to try, and you can always embelish with a button or 2 or a knit flower
