What I don't understand is how these people are able to last into their 90's without getting a well-deserved push into the path of an oncoming bus.

There's a really poignant bit in 'the rise and fall of the third reich' related to him and Goebbels children shortly before they were executed. I always got the impression his work during the war was mostly just a job, as it was for many nazis. He served his time as well, 9 years in a soviet labour camp.
