The Difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England Explained

I say British but I'd rather not have to say anything. Often just say London. When asked where do I live only the Spanish generally appear to have heard of Wales ("Ah, Gales!")

Got a lovely reminder once of how the UK/Britain/England doesn't hold the kind of global awareness in people's minds that sometimes people from here think it does. In the hills in Luzon (Philippines) once got asked where we were from. Pretty sure we'd said London, England.

"And what religion does that make you? Buddhist, yes?"

Thing is when we tried to explain we were atheists we got a hell of a row. You just aren't allowed to be atheist in the Philippines. Really heavily Catholic country, makes Pakistan look like a secular country.

Brittany is quite refreshing in this regard - there's a clear distinction drawn between "Pays de Galles" and "Angleterre" there. Perhaps not surprisingly.

ETA: there is a dialect local to Brittany, called (I think) "gallo". I was over there on a twinning visit, when one of the Welsh-speaking guests struck up a conversation with someone who spoke gallo, and it was rather impressive just how good the crossover was - they were able to have a perfectly intelligible (to them, not to me :) ) conversation, despite the Breton guy speaking no English, and the Welsh one having no French.

Yeah, when we sat out last year's heatwave in our van on the wonderful coastline of the Armorican Massif, hanging this* from the awning worked a treat!
