The Difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England Explained

:( It actually is one of the things that persuaded me a little. It's always been an interesting country but not interesting enough.

I love the way he talks so quickly. Give the info right then right there and let people pause and replay if they want to.

"the Jews and the Arabs finally figured out which one should live in the Holy Land. Me, they both said."

Never heard of this place before:

And a fuck off radar base in the troodos mountains.
The UKSB cops are Cypriots paid and equipped to UK police standards. They aren't armed but do enforce UK standard motoring laws. Speed limits and helmets for motorcycles. Backed by armed squaddies.
Which usually stops tourists who get arsey. Or the odd tosser who blows through the checkpoint. You may be doing over a ton but a telephone is quicker and there's a checkpoint at the other end as well..
Which is fair enough we pay for the road.
The odd Cypriot famer gets pulled over because his load is unsafe once had to unload nearly a 100 chickens from a pickup truck that was half the load!
He came back for them after a couple of hours !
There is also an airbase there that U2 spyolabes don't fly from.

It’d be interesting if (as the thread starter) editor could add a poll asking Urbanites from the various parts of the Union (NI, Scotland, England and Wales) how they would describe themselves as when they’re abroad and are asked where they’re from.

I’m far more people from Wales and Scotland would describe themselves as such rather than British. More puzzling is whether English folk describe themselves as English or British.

NI citizens are a whole different ballgame of course. I assume some call themselves Irish. But do the rest use ‘Northern Irish’ or ‘from the UK’? Not technically British, right?

I’m a filthy Continental btw so no hidden agendas in my post.

That's a good idea. Why not start a new thread with that poll?

As for me, I've always thought of myself as Welsh first - by a massive margin - and then British. More recently, I feel like I want to describe myself as Welsh first and European second.

I was born and have lived in England but my dad was Scottish, I describe myself as British rather than English.

It's one of the things I most like explaining in English lessons - though I leave out the overseas territories. It's not even that hard to understand once it's explained well.
Not so easy to explain that the Queen is also the Duke of Normandy, and rules the Channel Islands as such.
