The all boxing thread

Despite his clownish public persona, Fury knows what he's doing I think, or I hope. Maybe he knew he wasn't going to get to fight AJ in December for the huge money that's been talked about. AJs meltdown hints at a fragile mental state. He takes a few months away from the pressure, gets himself sorted and he's ready to go.

In the meantime neither Fury nor Usyk will wait around for him hence this fight.

Aj is in full evasive action

Fury is pure boxer, mover, brawler packed into a mad sized body

The Fury AJ fight is the weird kind of closure we need from the boxing universe

They ran parallel and theoretically threatened each other and needed to meet

They didn’t and subsequently the consensus is that they were no way equal then in that time frame and fury has done nothing but improve and AJ has repeatedly dropped his ball

Whatever fury does fightwise in future is charitable to some extent apart from the Usyk fight

Messy
Must admit, I thought it was more gamesmanship from Fury than a desire to really fight AJ (even though I think he'd win fairly easily). He first of all set dates for the fight which might just have been enough time for physical preparation for AJ, but not really mental preparation after the 2 defeats. Then there was the pantomine of the contract deadlines. In a way, I'm not sure either of them really wanted the fight. Or perhaps Fury only wanted it under these circumstances (if that isn't too illogical a way of putting it). Makes me more and more a Usyk fan, a strightforward bloke without all the nonsense. And whilst I suspect he loses to Fury, he's the better pound for pound fighter.

D'you mean that it would've suited Fury to fight AJ at a time when the latter was physically (but perhaps not mentally) ready? I get that, but would've thought Fury would be confident of beating AJ at any time... so maybe as you say this was just a clever bit of gamesmanship.

Something else just occurred to me - amid consideration of AJ's mental state and possibility fragility (as was demonstrated with his mic-hijack meltdown at the end of the last Usyk fight) - how much should Tyson's bipolar diagnosis be taken into account?

I wouldn't call that 'fragility' as such, and I'd guess (and hope) he's on effective medication and getting other support that helps keep him on an even keel, and not go off the rails and into drink & drugs as in the past.
The other Tyson, Mike, was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder IIRC - in his autobiography - seemed like his illicit drug use may have been self-medication?
I can only recall having known two people who were diagnosed bipolar - both were friends, one still is - I'd never have known it from the current friend's behaviour, but then he takes his meds regularly. The other bloke seemed like he was off his head on acid; he was a scaffolder and I think was noted for leaping about dangerously on sites in a fearless but reckless way - I recall him coming round my flat very late one night with an 'urgent' plan whereby we could both get rich by digging up some buried treasure in a graveyard - he'd got a map, something to do with the position of the stars in the night sky that week - I just thought he was tripping, and only found out about his diagnosis later on. Lost touch with him years ago, I hope he got himself sorted out with psychiatric help and meds if applicable.

Both were / are very charismatic individuals, as could also be said of the two Tysons, Fury and Mike

hmm the shite between Smith and Eubank is fucking embarrassing for Boxing

Today’s final press conference for this weekend’s British collision between Chris Eubank Jr and Liam Smith turned a little ugly as the fighters began talking about their impending battle, but soon started taking personal digs at one another. Everything seemed to be business as usual until Eubank Jr mentioned Smith “sliding in his DMs”.

“You slid into my DMs,” Eubank Jr said during an exchange with Smith. “You sent me a direct message. I’m used to seeing girls in my DMs, I’m not used to seeing guys I’m about to fight.”

“You’re going on about girls, mate. Has anyone in this room ever seen you with a girl?” Smith shot back. “Have you got something to tell us, really? Because you’re 33, you said on the program when you’ll have kids. For no laughs, no nothing, do you want to tell us something? You’re putting pictures up of Neymar in limousines. Do you want to tell us something?” Smith continued. “Because nobody in this room has ever seen you with a woman.”

Chris Eubank Jr vs Liam Smith press conference gets personal as fighters trade insulting words

aye Jr is a plank but fair play to his response in the weigh in

In a tweet, Eubank shared a photo of him wearing the armband saying: "We don't discriminate... we don't alienate. We want boxing & sport as a whole, to be all inclusive."

Riakhpore very impressive. Expect belts for him in the near future.

Not sure who I want to win between Eubank and Smith

Mismatch IMO.

I met Yarde a cpl of times, last time in the Landmark in Marylebone, lovely guy.

I’d rather see him fight Buatsi.
