Star Trek TV series(es) - general discussion of the franchise

Anyone got any one-off characters they wish had been given another appearance? Watched ST:TNG First Contact (the TV episode, not the film) the other day and thought Mirasta Yale was an interesting and endearing character who could have been worth a revisit.

Mirasta Yale

Why did they ditch the idea?
They had it in mind for her to be a love interest for Geordi and motivation for a dangerous operation to restore his sight. The actors weren't told so they played it as a mentor relationship that made it a bit weird and no-one thought Geordi would go for a coffee spilling clutz. She is in Samaritan Snare as well though.

The Pakled are the best invention in all of Star Trek

“Welcome to the Pakled spaceship, the Pakled. I am Rebner.”
“Yes Rebner, we have met several times.”

Been watching the Next Generation as never saw it when it first came out.

I just loved the Pakled.

None of this trying hard to evolve and develop. Like they are supposed to. With possibly eventually joining the Federation. They just decide to go around and nick other "higher" civilisations technology.

Something I rather liked about them was sticking two fingers up at supposedly superior civilisations.

Co incidentally Ive been reading up about British Empire. There is something of Liberal Imperialism running through Star Trek. Picard / the Enterprise representing Liberal Imperialism. Bit like later British Empire one of whose justifications was of course other peoples should get some independence. But they have to wait until the British Empire has brought them up to the right level.

The Romulans represent "nasty" Imperialism.

not sure about the British empire being liberal imperialism who did they bring up to the right level and give more freedom to

but the rest of your post works out

The Pakled are basically cats.

Not an uncommon observation.

just here is the klingons you suspect "do not ask any questions " :hmm:

As the missus has a Paramount+ subscription and they appear to have the rights to the entire ST franchise, I’ve just decided to start Deep Space Nine- somehow the only series I hadn’t watched a single episode of yet.

I think that was partly because the few episodes of Voyager I’d seen left me distinctly underwhelmed. But I’ve been told by multiple ST fans that DS9 is where the smart money is.

The first episode looks a bit pedestrian so far, but then the very first episode of TNG was utter shit, so I am more than prepared to give this the benefit of the doubt.

Do Trekkers in on these boards concur with my friends’ opinion that DS9 is among the best ST shows ever made?

I've seen that opinion on here a lot but personally i never really got on with DS9 and much preferred voyager. I haven't seen all the DS9 episodes though to be fair.

Yes, it's probably my favourite ST incarnation. There's wine cracking episodes and story arcs.

Plus some stinking ones, yes I'm thinking of the singing one :D

Every ST series had stinking ep's to be fair :D
Some are more stinking than others

I mean Spock's brain is bad but it's a fun kind of bad.

Season 1 of TNG has some slightly fun badness but also just boring badness.

DS9 first season was also rough in places. The B5 comparison didn't help.
It also didn't have as much of a fun monster of the week or planet of hats vibe.

I also felt more comfortable getting into Voyager.

It took me until earlier this year to finally watch all of DS9. I'd made several attempts in the past but I didn't take to it. For me, it's still the least watchable of the ST franchise. It has its moments and there were times I'd watch several episodes back to back but then it would hit a rough patch again and I'd not watch another episode until there was nothing else to do.

I’m on sick leave and the highlight of this has been watching various Treks, particularly Gene Roddenberry’s Futurama Lower Decks for the first time. It’s great fun but is kinda ruining the moments of gravitas and/or taking itself far too seriously in the other Treks :D

The only Trek I absolutely had to give up on was Enterprise, and tried to persist with that waaaay longer than it warranted.
