Squeezed Middle Watch

You can argue some of what thatcher did was neccessary British leyland did need putting out of its misery:mad:
but she went to far

These people genuinely don't know they're fucking born do they? They earn in one year what I earn in about 25! I like Dogsauce's vision for the revolution. I want to feed these people to my pets, pets of my friends and pets of people I haven't even met yet. I want various animal shelters around the country to have these people as their food supply.
i thought you were an animal lover. but now i see you're not.

If I were a member of the working classes who’d been laid off in the '80s or '90s, I might be laughing at the middle classes right now. Because we’ve duped and screwed by the elite just as the lower orders were

someone should tweet this thread at that journo lol

Because private education perpetuates an elitist system (cf the current cabinet).

Because every child should be educated in small classes, have access to good science equipment and other facilities.

Because education should not depend on money.

etc.
and of course state education doesn't have any ideological input, is solely for the benefit of children, and does not entail any statist indoctrination

I've seen this before, but comparing Farage to Salmond in that they are both populist leaders and behave differently to the current lot.
I wouldn't say Salmond was a populist. Farage is deffo a populist (and much else besides). The two parties couldn't be more different: the SNP has a social democratic current, while UKIP is unremittingly Thatcherite with a heavy streak of Empire loyalism.

UKIP is unremittingly Thatcherite with a heavy streak of Empire loyalism.

That's true, and becoming more evident with their conference announcements, but their whole 'harking back to the 50s' shtick means harking back to a time of widespread social housing, the still novel NHS, welfare state etc etc.

In my more optimistic moments I like to think that a lot of people who vote UKIP are actually nostalgic for a lot of those things, but they don't realise that UKIP won't provide them. So perhaps there is an opening for a left-wing party that has a 'no nonsense, we're going to go back to what worked' approach - effectively, proposing much more state intervention but with UKIP's presentational style.

Back when 'Kate' and 'Wills' started seeing each other, and there was the whole thing in the media about the Middletons being middle class and isn't it wonderful it shows how the monarchy are now just normal people etc, I realised that my understanding of the term middle class was a whole lot different to the BBC definition. Middletons middle class? Eton middle class? Fuck off. Just fuck off right now.

Not even on the same planet as we are :O

I've spent a fair bit of time on the neighbouring farm to the Middletons' place, even having Christmas Dinner there. I also celebrated my 40th in their local pub*. Everyone who comes with to their village, no matter how apolitical makes jokes about the Middletons being middle class. It's done more to raise class consciousness than any lefty propaganda I can think of!

* I should probably point out that the farm is one that is open to the public, I take my daughter there for a day out to feed the deer etc.

my earnings as a freelance writer are unpredictable.

how much does clickbait for the DM pay? Is it enough to cover the humiliation- there's virtually no-one sympathetic to her, and one post that is has been downvoted 1100 times.

Four same sex kids who all have their own room and they can find £45 a WEEK for a tutor? Nope, can't find any sympathy there.

'After we spent all our money on a house we couldnt spend it on other things.' Woe.

Also I don't understand why they spend £2k a month on general living.

Four kids? If they were on benefits, or were 'immigrants' there'd be a myriad of people saying they should have used a condom/stopped at two/not had kids etc.

Because it's the DM people are banging on about them being 'hardworking'. FFS how do we know she's 'hardworking' - she's a freelance journalist and might write two pieces a year.

I must admit I was surprised at the pic of the £1m house.

If they were on benefits, or indeed working on a low enough wage to still need Housing Benefit they'd only be allowed 3 bedrooms as all three under 10s would be expected to share one room.

She could always sell the 1mil house and go live somewhere cheaper.................oh but only people claiming are forced to do that, silly old me
Innit? She's being so noble sucking it up in her beautiful 5-bedroom house with massive kitchen and garden.

It was banging on as taking private education, ski-ing holidays etc. as a given that really irked me. Spoilt stuck up bitch who has no idea how real people live.
