John Cooper Clarke and Martin Hannett did it way better 40 years before:
Thank you for putting that entertaining vision in my head. I hope Glasgow does itself proud. They play Glasgow next/this week, hope the whiney twee cunts get Palestinian flags galore, few flagpoles too, thrown at them. Unl;ess on of them has flu of course...
By the way I meant to ask this earlier , where is the mast of the hard left these days just in case any posters on here want to nail something to it ?Now who is making stuff up? I had a period of listening to them circa 2015 but haven’t much since. I sometimes check out their new stuff and sometimes don’t. So I hardly “love” them. I just don’t think some of the criticism is fair. Some of their lyrics touch on social issues but have they ever said they’re a political band and nailed the colours to the mast of the hard left? You’d think they had given some of the comments here.
Oh come off it - their lyrics are about as sophisticated as those tramps’ poems in the back of The Big IssueI saw them for the first time last year and thought Jason was a very compelling front man. Billy Nomates guest singer also compelling. I think they're a great live band.
I don't expect bands I like to be politically clued up necessarily, but it is disappointing that he was that clueless in Madrid.
I disagree. I take you back to Jobseeker as the example. Going to sign on and telling the truth rather than playing the game. I think that's clever, honest and very effective.Oh come off it - their lyrics are about as sophisticated as those tramps’ poems in the back of The Big Issue
Not even from Sleafordare they actually Mods?

Ah, didn’t know that. Gotta link?not you! JCC
Ah, didn’t know that. Gotta link?
The name put me off investigating them, but the song in the OP is ace. Actually worth listening to the lyrics!
Listening to Austerity Dogs now. A punk Pitman vs Suicide vibe. Ace.
This was all done far better by Sicknote's superlative Death Before Employment. It’s Big Issue shite:
So Mr. Williamson, what you doing in order to find gainful employment
Since your last signing on date?
Fuck all
19.4 top
18.6 middle (Rob)
19.2 top
18.4 mate, middle
Jobseeker!
Can of Strongbow, I'm a mess
Desperately clutching onto a leaflet on depression
Supplied to me by the NHS
It's anyone's guess how I got here
Anyone's guess how I'll go?
I suck on a roll-up, pull your jeans up
Fuck off, I'm going home!
Jobseeker!
Jobseeker!
So Mr. Williamson, what have you done in order to find gainful employment
Since your last signing on date?
Fuck all
I've sat around the house wanking
And I want to know, why you don't serve coffee here?
My signing on time is supposed to be ten past 11
It's now 12 o'clock
And some of you strange bastards need executing
Mr. Williamson your employment history looks quite impressive
I'm looking at three managerial positions you previously held with quite
Reputable companies, isn't this something you'd like to go back to?
Nah, I'd just end up fucking robbing the place
You've got a till full of 20s looking at you all day
Well I'm hardly gonna fucking bank it
I've got drugs to take and a mind to break
Jobseeker!
Can of Strongbow, I'm a mess
Desperately clutching onto a leaflet on depression
Supplied to me by the NHS
It's anyone's guess how I got here
Anyone's guess how I'll go?
I suck on a roll-up, pull your jeans up
Fuck off, I'm going home
Jobseeker!
Jobseeker!
Jobseeker!
Jobseeker!
Jobseeker!
Jobseeker!
Jobseeker!
Jobseeker!
Jobseeker!
Jobseeker!
Jobseeker!
Jobseeker!
Out!
Urban has a long tradition of hating on figures they previously lauded.
So? the novelty value palled very very quickly. I think I only listened to it that one time.I honestly wasn't trying to catch anyone out when I decided to go and read the first few pages of this thread, but I'm glad I did, cos this is quite funny now:
Tbf, the build em up and knock em down phenomenon is not unique to urban.Urban has a long tradition of hating on figures they previously lauded.
Of course, but the context is here. Over the years I’m thinking Bill Hicks, Michael Moore, Banksy etc. Brooker was loved and then loathed too iirc.Tbf, the build em up and knock em down phenomenon is not unique to urban.
Oh, there's been a lot of criticism of DB. Much as his output is amazing, it can be hard to separate the man from his art.Of course, but the context is here. Over the years I’m thinking Bill Hicks, Michael Moore, Banksy etc. I think Sleaford Mods don’t get a fair hearing really where artists like Bowie are beyond the pale to criticise.
I love Hicks. But if he were alive today I've no doubt he'd be an utter crank. He was from Austin, along with Alex Jones and that bellend Rogan.Of course, but the context is here. Over the years I’m thinking Bill Hicks, Michael Moore, Banksy etc. Brooker was loved and then loathed too iirc.

He was a bit conspiraloonery too tbf.I love Hicks. But if he were alive today I've no doubt he'd be an utter crank. He was from Austin, along with Alex Jones and that bellend Rogan.
He was of his time. But in the post covid social media era he'll be laughing it up alongside Dave Rubin and moaning about what is a woman. He was a bit conspiraloonery too tbf.
You should have heard me in the 1980s!!where artists like Bowie are beyond the pale to criticise.
