Six Nations 2022

Just rewatched the Ireland game and while we lost there is a lot to be pleased about. Joey had a good game though I’d like to see him flatter and run straight. Or go missing by standing ten meters back and kick useless garryowens.

We have two obvious problems a lightweight second row and an 8 that goes into his shell when pressured. Would have been a fair game to see Coombes in at 8.

eta another rewatch and I find myself critical of Joey. Need some decent TV.

Won't post a link to the vile rag but the Heil is claiming in an exclusive that SA are to join the 6N in 2025 at the expense of Italy. Some pretty profound ramifications for the global game there. Can't imagine it will be welcomed in Aus, NZ or, of course, Italy.

Totally agree with that last squidge tweet. Although I’d probably follow my old club more regularly by actually attending games.

My rugby loving mate suggested a six nation b division with teams like Portugal, Georgia etc.

The winners of that six nations get promoted to the Real six nations the following year and replaces whichever team comes bottom, with that team dropping into the b division.

that's a better suggestion that just bringing in a ringer from the southern hemisphere

and screwing up developing rugby nations worldwide

I like that as well. Italy have now lost 32 games on the trot, is being in the 6N helping them?. Surely giving the like of Georgia a shot at it would be better?

It's a good idea but the tier 1 unions would never agree to it. Relegation would basically = bankruptcy for the unfortunate home Union.

I think that's the development pathway that Squidge is referring to. Italian U20s looking very good. Five more years and that could translate into Italy being competitive

E2A - but if they're going to be given the old heave ho then there's no point in their developing players for elite competition

I'm not opposed to a "Division 2" with relegation/promotion every year. It wouldn't hurt Italy's progression to win some games, and Georgia deserve a chance. If any of the home nations go down, it's their own fault, and they'll come straight back up anyway.

The link up with SA is bollocks and I hope it doesn't come to anything. It is pure greed.

might just be a hint to SANZAAR

hoping it's something amongst that line ,

would not be in a rugby point of view an improvement to either tournement, or development to international standards
the division idea is the best moving forward

Totally this. But I can't see it happening, cos money.

was just going to post that my favourite bit was when we asked the ref what we should do  with the response "I'm not your coach, I'm the referee. It's not for me to work out your strategies,'

aha misquoted there from the source I found

'parachute payments'?

They're totally unfair but could be a solution. Plus a more equitable distribution of TV money?

I know, silly. I agree that it's never going to happen.

One thing that surprised me many years ago was how popular the then five nations was in Spain. It was shown live on TV and generated a fair bit of interest. Rugby could grow massively if it wanted to.

It is also a competition based in Europe, with the history and grudges around that, won't it be too disruptive getting in a side from another continent?

I had a slightly random few days in Zaragoza in northern Spain a few years ago. There was publicity all over the city centre for the local rugby team, publicising women's and kids rugby as well as the men's first team, which, yep, surprised me.

(as did the local bagpipe band in the main street one day, and pork scratchings in the supermarket, tbh)

I was in northern Spain as well. I'm guessing it's not as big in the south, but then it's not big all over England.

Remember rugby being a thing in Romania back in the 80s. That didn't seem to come to much. The big boys don't want to let anyone else into their party.

as an irish rugby fan can we not just celebrate italy's greatest moment in rugby

the mad thing about this was that the Chiefs (Waikato, not Exeter) had used the exact same tactic in the first two games of the Super rugby season that very year and by game three, along with significant coverage in the more competent rugby analysis press, it had been figured out by the other NZ teams. As soon as it happended the first time I was all 'oh look, they're trying a chiefs' so it was frankly staggering no England players on the pitch could figure it out until the second half (after presumably being told what was happening by coachs)
