Rutherglen and Hamilton West (... eventually)

If Labour lose this one, I feel that it puts their victory at the next election in doubt.

Although I hope that Labour will win the next election, I'm very tempted to place a bet on a Conservative win.

Why do I doubt a Labour victory? Of the 1000 or so Conservative losses in the Council elections, Labour only picked up about half.

Quite. Keith is up against the biggest, steaming pile of shit that has ever been dumped on UK politics, 13 years of abysmal Tory rule, from austerity to Brexit to the utter, blatant corrupt gouge-fest that was the pandemic, to Johnson grinding the country's reputation in to the ground, only to be followed by Truss and that Kwanteng blob of spent spunk, ffs Labour should be light-years ahead. But here we are, barely pulling forward on the very safest of seats. Chaos, just what the Dr ordered

I don't expect the SNP have much of a reputation for honesty in Rutherglen anymore but do people see them as being as bad as the Tories in running things? Presumably the latter still get a lot of blame

Anecdote masquerading as data alert.

We had dinner with a couple we've known for 25 years, who live in the constituency. They are third sector workers (different NGOs), he's from Bristol, she's from Aberdeen. Progressive, arty, literate, follow the news. Originally long term Labour voters (not members). Voted No in Indy ref. Suddenly switched to SNP at the following GE for reasons I never pinned down. Voted Remain in Brexit ref. Then became independence supporters, mainly due to Brexit and Boris.

They are now very disillusioned with the SNP, and politicians in general. They won't vote SNP in by election. They said they obviously won't vote Tory, they said they can't vote Labour because of Starmer, who has shocked them on immigration and the climate, they think voting Green is statistically a waste of time, and they just laughed when I mentioned the Lib Dems.

Now, in the past they've had a go at me for not voting. "People fought for your right" "you can't complain if you don't vote" that sort of thing. But they are now thoroughly disillusioned and can't see how they would vote.

I know this is just one couple, but I suspect them of being indicative of a cohort in the population. Broadly "liberal" broadsheet readers who were won over by Sturgeon but who are now just disgusted with politics.

I think the "middle class" vote might have a low turn out in this by election.

Well then I would advise voting but spoiling the ballot in such a way that will provide amusement to the council counting staff and the party scrutineers.
Doodle a penis which fills, but does not go beyond, the boxes beside the candidates names.

Also, I misread you and thought you were betting on a Tory win in Rutherglen and Hamilton West! 🤣 Now that I’ve had a nap and re-read it I’m regretting my rashness! 😱 But a bet’s a bet. 🙂
If you want to cancel it please do. If I was betting on a Conservative win in Rutherglen, I would be expecting the strait jacket squad imminently.

A decision was made today at a meeting of the Alba National Council with the former First Minister saying the party wants to give the SNP a chance to "fly solo" as it fights off a resurgence in Scottish Labour popularity.

The party said it is continuing to encourage it fellow nationalists the SNP to agree to a “Scotland united” strategy.

This would see just one pro-independence candidate put forward in each Scottish constituency.

Speaking at a meeting of the party’s national council in Rutherglen, Alba leader Alex Salmond said: “The SNP leadership seem to think they can go it alone in Rutherglen and in the next General Election.

“We have decided to stand aside at this by-election to give them the maximum opportunity to prove they can successfully fly solo.

“We believe that four pro-independence candidates already in a first past the post election risks handing the seat to the unionist Labour Party.”

Alba also announced today plans for a general election strategy discussed at the party's meeting held in Rutherglen.

Mr Salmond added: “We are also fundamentally opposed to this by-election taking place at all.

"By combining with the Labour Party to treat Margaret Ferrier with such disproportionate disdain the SNP have created their own problem in Rutherglen and should be now left to face it.

“However, for this to succeed they will have to reclaim their own party from a leadership who have lost their way on both governance of Scotland and strategy towards independence.

“ALBA still stand ready to move forward with a Scotland United approach but now are also making preparations or a wide scale intervention across Scotland at next year’s General Election.

So in Scotland it's pretty much illegal to stand for a party that hasn't got 'Scottish' in the name huh?

I think we should modernise our electoral systems and introduce hanging chads.
It's surprising that the use of electronic counting machines in London over the last few Mayoral elections didn't cause the usual suspects to blow a fuse.
