Had the privilege of hearing Israeli/American anti-Occupation Rabbi Arik Asherman speak today at our rabbi's house - a truly courageous man facing trial next month on made-up charges, really for the 'crime' of defending the rights of Palestinians on the West Bank not to be driven off their land by bastard Settlers.

Among interesting and depressing observations: there are still Israelis standing with Palestinians as he has been doing for years, but the numbers have dropped since 7 October. He described the courts as 'the flak jacket of the Occupation', covering up their land theft with legalese, shrugging their shoulders and saying the police are supposed to intervene when Settlers turn up with their guns (and often uniform willingly lent by the IDF). Also that standing up for human rights is being seen as 'provocation'... a pattern I think we are seeing repeated in too many places around the world now, but used extra gratuitously in Israel.

gsv has been thinking what we can do in response - he was saying it would be good to hear more from Jews in the diaspora opposing Israel's actions and gsv reckons we should maybe leverage our group of fellow congregants who feel the same way to form at least some sort of voice that can put out statements on behalf of British Jews who feel the same way, as this is meaningful support to the very thin line Rabbi Arik represents of Israelis trying to protect Palestinian rights.
