P&O Ferries sacks workers and docks ships

Fantastic. 800 workers sacked on the spot , by a multi million company , which the Tories knew about but kept silent , private security brought in with handcuffs and you want to criticise the RMT ( and apparently ASLEF) for its position five years ago in a referendum on leaving the EU?

Hang your head in shame pal.
I don't see having a problem with one as excluding the other. Idiots don't get a free ride just because other people are assholes too. I hardly think it's necessary, given the content of the thread, to waste space pointing out that Dubai is full of fuckheads and the Tories are scum.

So the Union defending the sacked workers are also idiots now ?

Don’t bother replying plz

Imagine holding politics where when you read about 800 workers getting sacked on the spot your instinct is to a) blame the workers union and b) deliberately conflate Tory anti union laws with the Brexit debate.

By the way Chz the RMTs record in standing up for its members interests - on the tube, on the trains, cleaners, porters, taxi drivers and now P&O workers - is pretty well known on here. If you want to side with their opponents you’re going to need to come better equipped than you’ve managed so far….

That's not the point at all. The point is that the claim brexit would protect workers' rights is utter bullshit. We've always had fewer rights than, for example, the French, and we've continued to have fewer rights and you don't need a crystal ball to predict that it's going to continue that way for a long, long time.
It's not brexit's fault, it's more the ridiculous claims made by the RMT/ASLEF at the time really grating.
it is better to keep quiet and be thought a fool than pipe up and prove the suspicions correct

Technically, I think that ships entering busy ports with bridge officers who are unfamiliar with that port need a pilot ...
As I understand it a pilot is always despatched regardless. I think even if you know the port this has to be at least agreed on by the port and the ports pilot first.

Things were shit before brexit and I was poor - things are still shit after brexit and I'm poor.
Things were shit before Brexit but I had a bit of money. Things are more shit after Brexit and like most non-very-rich -people I have a fair bit less money.

That wasn't what RMT or indeed anyone was claiming when they spoke about the relationship between workers rights and EU membership. But I'm sure that after years of this conversation now that you know that. It's the worlds longest most epic troll ever.

A naked class war is being waged against PO workers. Its crucial that the unions respond with occupations and sympathy strikes. Otherwise we will be truly fucked.
That's the spirit! More of these posts please.
Dunno hijacking a ferry full of people sounds easy when you put it like that.
Imagine the ensuing death toll from boat-happiness, I hear that shit is contagious.

BiB - yup, all ships, big & small, old & new have 'em.

Failing operating those devices ...

... sledgehammer, meet pipe [incoming seawater for cooling] [as per scuttling in Scapa Flow in 1919]

In 1919 they also welded the bulkhead doors open. Not sure if ferry staff have access to welding gear :(

That German fleet ended up being worth more sunk than afloat of course, as a source of radiation-free steel.

This believe it or not in The Telegraph

Revealed: Handcuff-trained heavies dispatched by P&O to ferry dispute

P&O has hired a private security firm to provide backup in the dispute with ferry workers.
The firm was asked to send 16 handcuff-trained officers to the Port of Dover in case of a "backlash" among staff after redundancies were announced.
An email sent to security guards beforehand, seen by the Telegraph, told them the job will last a week and they will be paid £14.50 an hour. It says:

It also reveals they were told to get to a hotel in the area by Tuesday and to undergo training on Wednesday.

Here's the message sent from the shitty security firm.

just remembered something - during the 88/9 strike, all of my dads ships crew homes were raided at the same time by customs and excise along with the coppers for protection including our local beat copper - who was mortified by the whole thing. same day, same time - from belfast to to the isle of wight, randoms pulling up loose floorboards and checking the vin of our car. looking into drug smuggling apparently. my mother gave them non stop shit as they pulled the house apart. curiously opportune timing for something of such scale. low level hassle, the cunts.
