Obi Wan Kenobi

I went into this expecting that in the great tradition of every Star Wars since the first film it would add even more awkward points that you have to really contort to keep what was said in the ANH straight.
But I was not expecting this
General Kenobi. Years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars. And he sent you to save me from kidnap. Now he begs you to help him in his struggle against the Empire. I regret that I am unable to present my father’s request to you in person, but my ship has fallen under attack, and I’m afraid my mission to bring you to Alderaan has failed. I have placed information vital to the survival of the Rebellion into the memory systems of this R2 unit. My father will know how to retrieve it. You must see this droid safely delivered to him on Alderaan. This is our most desperate hour. Help me once more, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope. Again

What do you mean by ‘I was not expecting this’? Please tell me they haven’t added that extra sentence in the latest cut of A New Hope…

I might not be able to recite the dialogue in that scene verbatim (just as well as that’d next level nerd territory), but I know for a fact it did not.

I thought one of the most positive things about all these recent Disney’s SW series is that the makers seemed to get how the fans felt about the future direction the franchise should take, as well as the things from past films most people if not everyone hated. They surely must be fully aware how universally despised the various edits and changes to the original trilogy Lucas kept inserting decades later are.

James Earl Jones is 91 and still rolling out the bangers.
I was just saying to the OH, he didn’t quite sound himself in Rogue One, which was understandable enough as people’s voices change significantly as they get older. But in this he was vintage Vader :)

Now, to this episode. I quite enjoyed it, but I suspect some hardcore fans might have an issue with this:
Namely Vader meeting Obi Wan here. Let’s revisit Vader’s opening salvo in A New Hope when he intercepts Obi Wan on the Death Star:

‘Darth Vader: I've been waiting for you, Obi-Wan. We meet again at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you I was but the learner. Now, I am the master!’

Now, up until today, I reckon if you asked a thousand SW fans if the above quote implies that was the first time they’d faced each other since their lightsaber fight in Revenge of the Sith, all one thousand would say ‘without doubt’. But now we have them meeting a mere few years afterwards. And more crucially, Vader’s just kicked his arse here. There’s no way he would have considered himself the learner.

Unless there are events yet to come in this series that make Vader see himself still as the student and Obi Wan the master, I guess… still it seems a bit of a cheap fan service storyline. More so the ‘your powers are weak now’ line borrowed from A New Hope.

I'd put money on Disney using de-aging and AI on the Vocals the same way they do with the faces.

Record a new performance, then use that and a ton of young JEJ clips to train an AI and tweek the audio.

Wouldn't be suppressed if they are building full digital models of actors for key roles.

As much as that means tricky royalty issues (Which so far they have seemed to have covered by just saying the original actor made the performance at least credits wise) I do appreciate that roles can kinda belong to specific actors.

I even liked Robo Cushing in rouge one.

Technology.
You can already do the equivalent of deep fake with voices. Jones can read a certain set of sounds and words and never have to utter an actual line of the script (another actor can do that) his current voice can be augmented with sounds from his previous performance in star wars and other films.
The technology has moved on significantly since Rogue One.

. . . . However, it's also possible that he just had an good day.

some musings:

I agree but then again that might be a whole load of us assuming that line meant something when none of what is in that line says they couldn't have met after Ep III, and of course this season does explain how he knew Vader had been a pupil of his. In fact you could even argue that him losing that fight in this episode doesn't really challenge any of that line (since he is the master by ep IV and was a learner in Eps I - III).

I think the big issue for hardcore fans would be the convo between Leia and Ben in the truck when they briefly talk about her parents (which is ofc a recurring issue caused by how quickly after Leia's birth Padme died in Ep III of course)

All they needed to do was keep a nerd on payroll to be in the room when script ideas were being bashed out.
Or even just a wipeboard and some post it notes of every line referring to something in the past . . . it's not like there are that many.

Just before the fire scene, both me and the boy just looked at each other and said "why is she killing stormtroopers instead of shooting DV?".

Ah well

Hopefully that was because she knew Jedi and knew she'd never hit him (or even better, because she is working with him).

There was a scene that initially felt like very poor & lazy screenwriting, but afterwards I wondered if it was tongue in cheek, and a nod to the original trilogy.

Namely when Obi Wan and Leia hide in that dwelling with the mute droid, then stormtroopers knock on the door and Obi Wan and Leia hide in the back room. The stormtroopers walk in, tell the mute droid they have information that a Jedi is hiding in the house, realise the droid cannot talk, and after a cursory glance across the front room they decide they’ve hit a dead end and walk out. Not even bothering to have a good look around the rest of the house.

I mean, we know stormtroopers are not always the sharpest knives in the drawer, but really?? It felt like the ‘we’ve found a spoon’ house search scene in Life of Brian

A: I will get what I deserve, third sister... And so will you!
B: I hope so... I certainly hope so.

Look, I'm sorry people enjoying this series, but that is the most godawful, cliched writing I've heard since... since the prequels.
