Obi Wan Kenobi

I’ll happily wrestle any fellow nerd in here for the ‘biggest SW fan’ badge, but was also somewhat underwhelmed by the opening salvo.

I think an unavoidable issue here is that any scenes or subplots relying on life-or-death situations for legacy characters are a complete waste of time- at least for anyone who’s watched Star Wars, which in this case it’ll be just about everyone.

With the likes of Mando and Boba Fett you at least enjoy the uncertainty of not knowing what might happen to the lead characters, or even legacy ones wgg hewn the story is set after the films.

Hopefully it’ll get more gripping, but for me this is a case of the trailer writing cheques the main series can’t cash.

I watched the first one, not sure I'll go back to the second, was it meant for a mainly child audience?
Not aimed at kids at all imo- more at legacy fans of the franchise. It just lacks the spark and wit of recent Disney SW series.

I found the first two episodes to be not bad.

I loved Mando 1 & 2 and recently binged Book of Boba and really liked that too.

This isn't that level so far

however as a jedi fallen order fan this feels on brand.

Leia is a little too precocious but EMcG manages to keep being a highlight.

The links to the prequels don't seem as jaring (or jarjaring) as they might be.

I think at this point Star Wars spin-offs have descended into 'pick nostalgia, assemble plot from Reddit'.

Mando I think was great at times, though don't really remember S2 (to be fair I'm not even sure I watched it). Fett started fine, but the town stuff towards the end was utter garbage. This was really just... Kind of fun nothing. And honestly the fun is wearing thin; same set pieces, same broad-brush characters etc.

I mean the obvious comparison this weekend is Stranger Things, which is also monetised nostalgia, but at least it has characters... And the nostalgia is drawing from a more diverse and far deeper pool (been listening to 'The Kingcast' - Stephen King podcast - recently so I suppose a lot of that is quite current brain for me). Long story short - last night's binge session of two eps of Obi-wan, 2 eps of ST:4 has left me with very few memories of the former, but plenty of interesting development from the latter. ST:4 very much not without its flaws, but at least something.

This

Mando would have been fine for me on a saturday afternoon in a knicght rider slot when I was 12, but I think I was only engaged in maybe two episodes as an adult. Bobba Fett was a bit of a joke with an even worse punchline. . . . but again, as a kids show maybe it was passable.
Just constantly going "hey 50 year old man, remember this star wars figure" isn't the least bit interesting to me anymore. The over saturation of Star Wars has watered down the whole franchise with an ever increasing amount of very average films and shows. . . . I see they have another one just around the corner.

At least three...

Most of them have been, but there are exceptions - Star Wars Visions for example.

as not a major star wars fan

always been a trekkie

the problem with star wars and sorry never was into the expanded cannon
but as Disney is now using some of it after doing a blank slate reboot

is not each new series not just world building

this series is a few episode in and has already explained by vader said to leia in a new hope "no escape for you this time"
and why she knew who the hell ben kenobi was

plus its going to answer the question of vader and kenobi last discussion before he became a force ghost

the complaints on this thread have been a little harsh

with standing as for the book of boba it had fett riding a friggin rancor

what more do you want :p

That's the problem with it though. It's just world building. The characters and plots are only there to slot the next hero narrative into the er... SWCU. And don't get me wrong here, I am all about world building and story-driven plots. Think it's a neurodivergent thing, but I find many aspects of proper character development difficult. I mourn the death of episodic series in the late 90s... I like consistency. But I also like actual characters... Maybe I want them Simpsons-like to reset every time, to give me that reassuring 'it'll be fine' thing... But they still need depth, still need to be more than just a reference.

Are you saying that like it's a good thing?

For me this is a very bad thing. Like the solo movie, where every single thing that was mentioned about his past in the first films all happened in about the space of week.
Or
Rogue One "A lot of people went to a lot of trouble to get this. . . . . . . literally just five minutes ago" . . . That line and the opening crawl of a new hope is the WHOLE film. The whole thing is pointless. Better call Saul, that's how you do it.

you are aware the first star wars movie was a one shot and the whole sage bullshit was created on the fly

then after the prequels they got rid of the plot of the sequel trilogy because lucas sold the franchise

star wars aside from its lone cub japanese influence has been a hot mess since its inception

solo was shite

rogue one did not have a opening crawl and was better for it

sorry dude not sure what going to recreat your feelings for star was as a 12 year old aside from doing mandy whilst watching a new hope

how old are your kids, enjoy it thru their reaction

:hmm:

can i suggest trek if you want depth more than lightsabre jedi ballocks :)

It's 21:50 on a saturday, and I need to acknowledge that maybe my critical faculties are not fully engaged... But watching some more ST:4 <no spoilers>

Steve (resigned): ...get in the car... wipe your feet!
<Dustin wipes feet on inside of car>

It's just a little character beat. Insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Literally just what I was watching... But in that one interaction there is more there than I got in 1.5 hours of Obi-wan.

as someone who never got star wars before rouge one

i wonder how far ahead :)

and fuck yeah i'm waiting on andor

solo was shite
Yes. That's what I said. I was using it as an example of how what you said was a good thing . . . . was actually a bad thing.
rogue one did not have a opening crawl and was better for it
Are you listening?
I said Rogue One WAS the crawl (and one line) in a new hope . . . and that's all it needed to be.
sorry dude not sure what going to recreat your feelings for star was as a 12 year old aside from doing mandy whilst watching a new hope
I don't understand this sentence.

My daughter hates it all. I don't get a lot of enjoyment out of that kind of reaction.

look boyo if even you kids hate star wars

stop watching it

HTH
I'm not.
I'm commenting on what I have previously watched. I think that is allowed under the terms and conditions of this thread.
I'm in no rush to watch this new series.

But it's an interesting point you make. My daughter is 15 and none of her friends or peers appear to be the least bit interested in Star Wars. Does it even have a future? What happens when all the 50 year old man babies get bored of the ever decreasing returns on their childhood investment . . . it or die?

. . and you are right, it's been a mess since the beginning. Cheesy plagiarised space opera saved by excellent editing. . .then BOOM already the next thing the world has is the holiday special. Now that it is huge there is no editor with big enough balls to jump in and tell them they have fucked the whole thing up.

We watched it, seems fairly promising although a bit distracted by rather retconn-y nature that seems likely to emerge

well. downloaded the first two episode. have to admit, I feel asleep at the scene were he meets the other jedi at night in the desert. woke up at the end scene. will watch again, but somewhat bored by it. and the opening was waay too long. Recap of the movies was 4 minutes too long.
