Notting Hill Carnival 2012

He heh. Went to carnival by mistake, Withnail style! Decided not to go cos I had so much work to do this week. Felt all righteous
grafting away on the bank holiday - but I didn't realise just how close my work is to carnival (Warwick Avenue). Man was knocking on my door asking to use the loo! (they got blanked!).

So I gave in. And had a right old laugh. Carnival's great aint it!

Aba Shanti i, jeez...

The b-line there was just mind boggling, absolutely loved it. Was drinking rum truffles, lovely bit of weed, not skunk, met Max and Karen from Seven Dwarves: The Wedding, sun was shining, absolutely stunning.

Stopped intending to stay for 15 mins and stayed for 3 hours , about every 15mins they seemed to turn up ( down ? ) the Bass until the bricks started to crumble on the flats opposite .

Spent Monday at the Rapattack then after that got closed down the Sir Lloyd. The latter one for me was the highlight for me, just amazing tunes and beautiful crowd to boot.

Good carnival, wandered about with the family on Sunday, settled in for some proper roots on Monday.

Lord Ambassador great as ever, and pushing the best sound I heard on a roots set. Their next generation of selectors will be running things :)

Had to meet some friends at Gaz's and both times I went there couldn't work out why it was so rammed. Both live bands I saw had one decent musician each and dreadful female singers. Sound wasn't too great either. Maybe I turned up at the wrong moment, 'cos been OK other years.

Channel One good, spent a very nice half hour there, nice mix of 70's classics and new stuff.

Really missed Observer - the selections, especially the long runs of rockers/steppers twelves played all the way through, but mostly the sound. There's not one system left in carnival that sounds like that. Partly the combination of valves and old school homemade speakers compared to the more professional 'bought' systems most now use, but also the way Austin set it up and played it. A huge loss.

That said Solution played great music and I'll watch Manasseh select all day - and did :)

That's quite good ska mate, some absolutely top class tuneage on that. Shame it doesn't have an accompanying video from his position in the Good Times bus, I'd say it'd be quite spectacular.
is it audio from carnival itself? (i should just listen to it really!)

GT is a real laugh...may have got a tiny bit more crowd pleasing over the years, but ive never failed to have a GOOD TIME there :D
ive posted it on here before, but 1999 carnival right towards the end Norman dropped Unfinished Sympathy and drinks went flying in the air, people started hugging and even a fear tears were shed!! Magic moment...goosepimples remembering it....you have to really build the crowd up to get that kind of a reaction, and Norman and Rudy really know how to do it, year after year.

*if you want to download that set it might be worth doing it now as BBC can be quite hot on taking stuff down on copyright breach http://soundcloud-download.com/

Just been finding out about PANORAMA, the Steel Pan competition at Carnival. Takes place on Sunday at 8pm (a nice thing to go to after carnival curfew) and this year had 6 bands competing. The winners were Real Steel who played an arrangement of the Prophet of Pan which supposedly is a tribute "to the late Dr Pat Bishop who was a legendary personality on the world stage in steelpan music. She was a lecturer arranger composer educator & cultural stalwart working in Trinidad & Tobago the Caribbean & Internationally."

Anyhow its complex and impressive stuff, and definitley going to try and make it it to hear it live next year...this footage is from the pre-competition rehearsals

I think this was the set recorded at the Red Bull anti-carnival pen - its good fun tbf
