Nicola Sturgeon's time is up

Probably difficult to find reasonably priced parking for something that big close to SNP HQ. The Old Town isn't exactly designed for large vehicles.

It's an indicator that they were in power for far too long - none of them thought to themselves 'hang on, if we use party funds to buy an £80k mobile home, and park it on Murrells' mums drive, its going to look dodgy as fuck..'

Imagine if a Chief Constable, or senior Army Officer, or NHS executive did the same?

There's an Americanism that I like - that politicians, like nappies, should be changed regularly, and for the same reason.

They had been there for so long, they were so entrenched, that they lost their sense of smell.

They probably aren't genuinely corrupt people - there's no beach front apartment with gold taps in Dubai, or Swiss bank account, they aren't Donald Trump or Johnson - but this stuff is what happens when people have power for too long with no friction to keep them switched on to what they look like from outside.

Things are not going well…

The reference to 'jewellery purchases' is interesting (is that a new one?). Not sure if it was jewellery bought 'for' someone or as an asset? Sometimes it's the specifics that give a story more impact, in the territory of bath plugs and duck houses.

I find all this incredible.

True, it's in Portugal, not sure if it has gold taps. :D

As with the Brexit vote, it increasingly looks as though the Scottish Independence referendum was a "sliding doors" moment never to be returned to, a one-off moment slipped through the fingers. The SNP 'ultras' will keep up the good fight but it's fairly obvious that the time is done.

Scotland will never be independent of the UK. Not ever. And the events of the last months or so have underlined that.

Not sure about that, though the moment does look to have passed. It's certainly difficult to see the SNP being in a position where they can have the confidence and mandate to deliver another vote for the foreseeable. There's an outside chance of the next UK general election putting kieth in a position where he has to do a deal with the SNP, the price for which is another referendum (following a further Holyrood victory). Labour wouldn't want to do that, but they might do it on the assumption that Yes would lose again.

Nah, nothing lasts forever - whether that's the UK or the 'just one more push, we're on the cusp' of the indy movement.

Do you live in Scotland?

No.

But observers of the news can often sense when the balloon has deflated.
I don't think you can get an accurate picture of the drive for independence here. When the Brexit vote happened it was abundantly clear that the split was 2/3 in favour of remaining in the EU. Scotland did not want to leave, and post Brexit the pathway to rejoining is via independence.

That seems like a fair assessment.

It's really not cool that the FM was recorded without her consent being sought, then that recording was leaked. Data protection violation right there.
That’s the bit that’s most telling. Not what she says. (Although she does say she’s expecting a leak). The fact someone thought “I’ll film this with my phone just in case”. Then waited two years to leak it.

That sounds rather threatening.

See, that's true - but if it was Johnson, or Sunak or some creature from Britain First, is there anyone who wouldn't say 'meh, politics is a rough old game...'?

Either the rules apply or they don't.

Never's a long time, how would they frame that bet?
Never. Scotland will never, ever, be independent.

The Brexit referendum has ensured that the UK can never re-enter the EU on reasonable terms. Not ever. Think about the NI drama and how customs checks alone has carried on for 4 years and counting. Rejoining would require the UK to sign up to Schengen, the euro, the works; that one referendum has set history to one unchangeable course.

Ditto the Independence referendum. There is no chance under the Tories that another referendum would be granted. Kier has made it very clear that Labour won't allow one either.

That No vote has also set history to one certain choice. That the collapse of the SNP has put that course in concrete is serendipity.

Believe me. Scotland knows what that one No vote has done. There will never, ever, be an independent Scotland. As with Brexit, the balloon has deflated.

Respectfully, you don't live here. So we'll have to agree to disagree.

Not living there doesn't matter a jot.

Sliding doors moments happen in politics all the time: PR voting systems under Blair, Brexit under Cameron, the Scottish Independence referendum. These things happen.

At the moment, the SNP is in disarray, Alba is held together by Alex Salmond of all people and all baggage, and Labour is on the offensive (see the groundwork being done for the potential Hamilton by-election.)

Opinion polls have shown the Yes vote tanking month by month. Cost of living is far more significant than Independence.

You won't get another referendum under Sunak, we all know that.
You won't get another referendum under Starmer, we all know that.

So what's left?

I agree that, currently, just about all the factors and agents are lined up against another vote. But 'never' is just daft. If you look at the graph in the link below, you can see that there have been massive variations in support for independence - from around 12% in 1979 to touching on 50% at other times. If the polls ever get to a consistent 50%+ there will be real pressure for independence. No guarantee anything like that will happen of course, but the fluctuations show there is no 'never'. https://www.ipsos.com/en-uk/35-years-scottish-attitudes-towards-independence

Nah, whilst as many know I am a strong remainer, one thing I acknowledge the EU is really good at is ignoring its own rules when it wants to. If the UK said we wanted to go back but didn’t want the EURO that ‘rule’ would disappear as fast as Farrage’s career.

The rules are only for little countries…
