moslems in the uk

Ok, assuming you are being remotely serious and this isn't in some way related to your RUC fixation, all the ones I know are Sunni. I only know that for sure about 4 muslim guys I know, sme from Bangladeshi families some from Pakistani families.

thank you for that.

now - sunni or shia?

No idea, I don't ask those kind of questions, I just accept them as people...them being a follower of Islam isn't as important to me as it is to some people.

it's not much use for the purposes of this thread.

Apparently 90% of the world’s Muslim community are Sunnis and 10% are roughly Shia - looking at the source countries for most of Britain's muslim population though I'd guess we might have even higher than 90 percent sunni here - just a guess though.

once we lose the fucking wankery on this thread perhaps my "genuine question" will receive the answers it deserves from more people than just brainaddict.

I guess the turks count as sunni , but i think theres a lot of different currents in turkish islam. Also in christanity catholism may be quite monalethic, but theres loads of variety in the protestant churches, i expect islam is more like having two branches of protestants.

I can't find anything on the UK either (but I'd agree with your guess). Here's another source for the 90% sunni global stats: http://www.neighbourhood.gov.uk/page.asp?id=527

Lots of info on the Muslim Council of Britain site: http://www.mcb.org.uk/links/leftmenu1.php#8

But no sunni/shi'a breakdown.

Doesn't help Pickman's much :(

it's been said before, but needs reminding:
Until recently the word was also spelled Moslem. Muslims do not recommend this spelling because it is often pronounced "mawzlem," which sounds somewhat similar to an Arabic word for "oppressor" (Za'lem in Arabic). A common mispronunciation of the word Muslim is “muz-lim”. That is, the letter "s" is pronounced as a "z." Instead, the word should be pronounced as it is written, "mus-lim."

do you want to surpress debate about muslims in the UK then?

I note that the British Census stats never look at the issue. To be fair, they don't give details on protestant/catholic divisions either. I suspect this is them choosing to withold the information rather than them not having it...

You bring it on yourself mate; it's not like its a only a few people who have noticed your, shall we say, interest in Muslims (or anything you percieve connected to them)...

Don't strop.

The Muslims I know in Birmingham attend fairly large mosques, (I beleive one is the largest in the city) so if Sunnis and Shias use seperate mosques it's a pretty safe bet well over 90% of Birminghams Muslims are Sunni.

Eh? You call PM fixation a debate? I never said anything of the like, just that i'm not obsessed with followers of Islam (nor do I view them as one big lump as implied often on here and elsewhere) like some people (both on here and elsewhere) are. I do wonder how many people who have "views" on them have actual direct and personal experience of them?

About a year ago I asked about eight Muslims who I know where they stood on the Sunni - Shia question.

If I remember rightly four said they were Sunni. Two said they were Shia. One didn't appear to know or care and one claimed to be some other type but I can't remember what. I've got to say none of them seemed particularly passionate about being part of one group and disliking the other ...

But eight out of who knows how many hundreds of thousands isn't much use for the purposes of this thread I don't suppose.

My mate is a Sunny muslim and he told me that all Shiites are wankers, my other mate shes a Shia Muslim and she told me that all Sunnis are wankers. And this is while all three of us were sat in a three over rice curry shop in Bolton town centre. We were in a Mosque in Bolton a few months ago and my mate who is a Shia muslim had a row with the immam because he told her a good muslim woman should have her face covered, she was spittin I tell the!!

So to answer your question Pickmans their from Bolton!!!!

I'm actually curious what the purpose of this thread is. The only thing I can deduce is some kind of link between Shia/Sunni Muslims here and elsewhere (ie what effect those overseas lives will have on communities here) but i'm not sure if PM really wants to understand the varying types of people, backgrounds, nationalities and ethnicities that make up the Muslim population in the UK...
