I have a bundle of OZ magazines stashed somewhere - awful toss on the whole - there is a story/ interview in one about an aged hippy who finds that the 1970's is less accommodating to his middle class entitlement to do whatever he pleases, take whatever he wants and rut with every woman he comes across as a human right. Not exactly parallel with this narrative and "i'm still STANding " is likely far from that, but there are some aspects of interest for both OP and the contributors. I will dig it out if I can be arsed . Its fucking awful shite though. Awful.

I really don't get the impression that Stanley is happy, never met a happy person so angry and boastful or such a heavy drinker anyway.
Well, I've never met a properly happy long-term alcoholic. But, supposing the drinking pre-dates the lifestyle change, I'd imagine it's more pleasant to be a serious drinker if you don't have any responsibilities or anyone giving you grief/advising you to stop.
