Libya - civil unrest & now NATO involvement

The end game seems well underway now that Gaddafi is sitting tight to the east of the three oil ports - dug in going no where: All his chips in hand and ready to play.

I think its a big mistake to think that Gaddafi is riding high at the moment. He has demonstrated survival power over many decades, and in recent weeks, but that does not mean he is safe this time. I suspect he will be gone at some point in the coming weeks or months.

try opposing an imperialist war agaianst Libya by saying - Please dont be bombing Libya , Ghadaffi is a right cunt that deserves to die . Actually thats what the lefties are doing .

Actually that is exactly what we did do with the stop the war campaign. We said Saddam is a cunt who deserves to fall at the hands of his own people, not by invasion. What we didn't say was "support Saddam Hussein. He's great" If we had the opposition to the war would have consisted of half a dozen ageing Stalinists, yourself and Ern. In fact the accusation that opposition to the invasion of Iraq automatically signalled support for Saddam, is a smear used by the right.

Or did you think 2 million people marched against the invasion of Iraq because they supported Saddam? You weren't that solitary bloke with the dog carrying the "I heart Saddam" Banner at the end of the march were you? You know, the bloke with stains on his pants who everyone avoided?

Are you going to tell us about the thousand + Palestinians that Gaddafi dumped in the desert now?

This is what anti imperialism looks like to Casually red.

Mariah Carey was paid $1 million to sing just four songs at a New Year’s Eve party.
The 38-year-old singer reportedly received the staggering sum from Libyan dictator Colonal Gaddafi’s son Saif son after agreeing to perform at the Nikki Beach Club on the Caribbean island of St Barts.
Mariah, who was at the event with husband of eight months Nick Cannon, shattered all pregnancy rumours as she enjoyed champagne and oysters during the party.
Other performers included hip-hop stars Jay-Z and Timbaland, who performed together on stage, before Jay-Z saw in 2009 together with his wife Beyonce Knowles.
Guests at the star-studded event include James Bond star Daniel Craig, who was with his fiancée Satsuki Mitchell, and actor Eddie Murphy. A source said: “They all had a great time.”
Mariah is not the first star to receive $1 million for a performance – Kylie Minogue received the same amount for a private show in Dubai last year.

Anarchostalinists have no heroes, fool.

Ayn Rand:
"Society will never buy into that tripe!! I am an anarcho individualist and I see that as being the worst thing that could happen to anarchism."

Joseph Stalin
"In reply Ayn, I believe that this could potentially work. That is solely because my name is in the title. Other than that it won't work. This is because the people of Russia are too used to getting fukced over by oligarchs and they wouldn't know what to do if that stopped!! On the other hand Ayn your anarchist views are so disillusioned that I want to bite your head off, and I shall order someone to do so."

That didn't really work too well though, did it?

It's just not a very good idea to be echoing the West's propaganda at the moment, even if some of that propaganda is true. It lends credibility to the war.

It got 2 million people onto the streets. How many do you think a campaign based on uncritical support for Saddam would have got?

Who is echoing the West's propaganda? Who was the first person on this thread to state that there are no mercenaries in Libya? Me!

Who was the first person to state that the rebels were killing black people? Me.

Who has pointed out, time and time and time again the double standards and hypocricy of the West? Me

Who has posted news articles that I suspect are blatant propaganda such as the appalling piece quoting Libyans as claiming to be happy their families are being bombed? Me. (an article that you defended Phil.

Propaganda? I have consistantly opposed this war I do so without slavishly supporting a vile dictatorship. The fact is Phil, I know that you actually agree with the criticisms I have aimed at Gaddafi. Which just makes your siding with lunatic stalinists and fake anti imperialists all the more puzzling. Propaganda? How about simply telling the truth?

I tell the truth. It seems to work for me.

It just seems to me that you're missing the point.

The point is that the West is attempting to plunge the entire middle east into chaos (OK we can disagree about whether it's intentional, but that is what's happening). But of course it claims that it is actually trying to save the people of the ME from mad dictators. For opponents of the war to spend time denouncing the mad dictators is playing into the hands of the propagandists. It lends credibility to their claims.

Much as I respect your intelligence and knowledge, I think you misread the Middle East quite often. I think you were wrong when you saw the protests in Iran as a people's uprising too.

I did, yes. The New York Times has many faults, but its reporters don't make things up. There was a case about five years ago of a NYT reporter who was caught filing made-up stories, and they spent about six months printing retractions. It was a major news story, because it was so unusual. They'll certainly spin the facts and may even report them selectively, but they don't straight-up lie.
