Knife crime: Fatal stabbings at highest level since records began in 1946

Here's some utterly depressing news

The number of fatal stabbings in England and Wales last year was the highest since records began in 1946, official figures show.

There were 285 killings by a knife or sharp instrument in the 12 months ending March 2018, Office for National Statistics analysis shows.

The ONS says one in four (71) of all victims (285) were men aged 18-24.

The figures also show 25% of victims were black - the highest proportion since data was first collected in 1997.

The figures show a 45% increase in the number of victims aged 16-24 and a 23% increase in those aged 25-34.

Knife crime deaths at highest level since WW2

last thread we had on this showed the stats weren't that unusual, but clearly on the increase

one of the interesting things about that chart is it shows that consistently the majority of homicides are not committed with a knife. so while the news on knife killings not great there is comparatively little attention paid to the means by which the other deaths are caused. i'd be interested in seeing the causes of those deaths in more detail.

it is on the excel sheet here (specifically table 4) - Appendix tables: homicide in England and Wales - Office for National Statistics

Nothing to do with there being virtually zero police presence anyware and everyone knowing that a 999 may not even get a response. I'd have thought that anyone weighing up the risks of carrying a knife would have thought it fairly safe.

We did all this conversation not two months ago, not sure if anyone really wants to do it again
knife violence and murders among youth

wtf was going on in 2003ish?

That's the year after the inquiry into Harold Shipman was completed. He was convicted of 15 murders, but the inquiry found another 200 or so. Perhaps they were all just lumped into the broad stats in 2003?

A lot of those knifings would have been in the home, not out on the street. It’s sadly common in domestic killings, just because that’s something that is to hand in the heat of the moment.

I remember reading something a few years ago that attributed some of the rise in stabbinga at that time to migrant workers in shared accommodation, typically from Eastern Europe, as it was quite common for people within that group to drink together at home (I guess because pubs might not have felt welcoming, and what else is there to do?) and drunken arguments escalated to stabbing in a few cases. It was suggested that this would have been less likely with public drinking as someone might have intervened or prevented that level of drunkenness (by not serving more drinks), or got help sooner.

I see Blair has weighed in.

I think the fear generated by this shit is a problem as well as the those horrendously receiving these awful knifings and shootings. How do you tackle it? Maybe by giving a fuck and not neglecting it. Make/take a stand. Each victim deserves justice, or we are fucking things up. If they take everything off you (ideological austerity, pandering to the wrong sections of society for whatever reason, e.g. prejudice and racism) then there is no sanctuary, recourse or justice.

Poverty, and falling in with a gang/the wrong friends is indeed a vicious circle. Those who avoid it become targets themselves. Shitty governments doing shitty things has consequences. I point the finger at this lot. I don't believe that they give a fuck. Yes, those who commit violence bear responsibility and should be held accountable. But that doesn't preclude the fact that this scandalous government should be fought tooth and nail. That's not partisanship, its disgust and a plea for justice.

I may be talking shite at this hour so apols if I'm out of order somewhat.

A whole *raises pinkie to lips* 211 chicken shops doesn't seem like much of a hard-hitting blanket campaign for the entirety of England & Wales either, apart from everything else wrong with the idea.

I bet it costing enough for the consultants & probably having to fork out ( )to the chicken shops.

Didn't Moreleys start this? In response to something that happened in one of their shops.
