The genuine left, despite playing an important role in numerous campaigns such as the anti-war movement in recent years, is in dissaray. As someone recently remarked, whenever it appears to be achieving some success it seems to instinctivey reach for the self-destruct button. However, the neoliberal project, championed by New Labour, is in deep crisis, too. At some point the left will need to mount an effective and united challenge to it.

But lets be as clear as possible; If it does manage to get its act together, it will not include the likes of James Purnell. It will be to drive out the the James Purnells and everything they stand for.

Purrnell is playing very much for the long view here. He's parroting about private and public mixes applied where each works best.

I think he's angling for a frontbench opposition position. I really don't think this is aimed at voters tbh- it seems more like noises that sound right to other politicos

Last night i watched the man of zero humility debating with Roy Hattersley on Newsnight....What a pair of prats.....
Both used the LP to feed their own egos and did bugger all to make things better for ordinary people. One of the very best things for Labour has been Purnell resigning but how the hell did a creep like that ever get selected to fight for Labour in Hyde.....I mean hadnt those people suffered enough with Shipman......Shipman and Purnell and his falt mate was apparently downloaded child porn.

Him and Roy Hattersley trying to pose as some kind of leftwingers was a complete joke. Hattersley has tried to reinvent himself as some kind of knight of social justice but all he ever was a scabby git who helped make the Labour party unelectable.
