Is Elon Musk the greatest visionary or the greatest snake oil salesman of our age?

Tesla could be credited with getting the ball rolling on the commercial success of electric vehicles, but I'd argue that's almost in spite of Musk rather than because of him. Other more established vehicle manufacturers have now moved into the BEV market, and their offerings are better than those of Tesla, whether that's in terms of price or build quality. Tesla is horrifically overvalued because Musk has convinced the stock market that they're a "tech company".

Hopefully the failure of the Cybertruck and it's shit-tastic design is the beginning of the end for Tesla.

An obvious point but I’m reminded that now Musk is alt-right, anti-woke etc there’s a certain irony that his main business is electric cars and space travel, surely both of which are entirely ‘woke’.

Entirely? Surely Space Nazis have been a thing for ages now..

Perhaps we need a “fash or woke” thread so we can classify absolutely everything as one or the other.

You’d have to ask the loonies but they tend to think climate change is a hoax so electric is a scam and expanding our horizons probably a waste of money when we could be spending it on guns or bombing some foreigners.
Where do the batteries in electric cars come from and do they enable the ongoing genocide in Congo and why is so difficult for cunts to walk anywhere?

nah, you would need a subforum where each thing could be voted on in its own thread for this to work

My unlikely theory is that he’s actually a woke environmentalist and realised that the only way to save the world is by getting right-wing arseholes to drive electric cars, so by clumsily faking it and becoming a hero to them he might convince them to give up the four litre pickup and get an electric version of a dumb truck instead. One day, the planet will realise this and thank him.

I did laugh at the idea it might all be an elaborate ruse. He’s on side with the environmentalists on the fundamentals of electric cars so now play a character to get the right wingers buying his cars too. Unfortunately, I think he’s gone way past that and we’re just seeing his true colours.

It’s actually plausible when you think about it. I don’t think he has the skill to have masterminded it though.

I also think he is probably quite liberal but will allow his annoyance with “the left” to drag him to the seventh circle of hell.

Think if you take the left path you find out that the wizard isn't really a wizard.

(Also, isn't he supposed to want us to turn to the right?)

"It's what Blade Runner would have driven"! :D

Seriously though this should be hugely embarrassing for Tesla and Musk. Haven't these vehicles only just come out?

This news comes on the tail of warnings from German testing agency GTÜ that Tesla's Model 3 is a prime candidate for rust. Apparently part of the problem is that they filled the A-Pillars with construction foam, which then becomes waterlogged when exposed to wet weather. Who the fuck signed off that design decision?!

There's quite a long history of stainless steel bodied vehicles ... what's different about the Tesla one, or is it just that the owners are too fussy?

Like with widespread segregation and the use of lead-based pigments, there's probably good reasons why unpainted stainless steel has fallen out of favour as a vehicle finish.
