Is Elon Musk the greatest visionary or the greatest snake oil salesman of our age?

imagine he went dark, disappeared, not literally, just refused interviews, refused to be on social media, and kind of vanished from the public sphere. Even the idea of that is radical and feels weird to even picture, so meshed he is with the narcissistic matrix of "being all over the internet". But if he just walked away. A few sightings a year, perhaps. Just a normal billionaire, goign about his business. He is on a large scale what is happenign across all of humanity - we are "profiles", constantly advertising ourselves to others, revealling ourselves, our online selves as an expression of what we want people to see. It would be weird and mad if he "deleted it all", refused all public appearances and interviews, and just done worked away in the background. this is what most with his wealth do. but for someone like musk it's probably literally impossible.

The thing with him is that, aside from the 'owning the libs' bollocks and the general internet gobshitery, his wealth is mostly in that hype isn't it. He's going to launch genuinely automated driving and brain implants and have rockets pinging back and forth into space, any moment now. So yeah it probably is impossible for him to withdraw. Amazon/Meta/Google etc are genuine evil empires so their emperors can sit in the background doing what they do. Musk is just a shit tech Wizard of Oz at root though.

He's going for less-likable John McAfee vibes

whenever I see him liking a frog meme or swinging a sword or trying to suck joe rogan's cock, my mind just fills with ways he could be in teh world. forgetting charity work or no charity work, just how to be in the world when your that rich and famous. dorsey seemed to know this - only doing an interview once a blue moon. in a way he is so interpellated into the online matrix that he is it, no real seperation. he is more meme or LARP than anything else. i have heard influencers actually talk about this phenomenon, where the inner private world becomes just fodder for the online world, the inner private world is a curation for what can be posted.

And the Hyperloop!
The Hype - er - loop?
Was he hoping we'd forgotten that?

yes, unfortunately the reality is his wealth has grown something like 10x since 2020 due to tesla/space x stock. the fucker.

There was thing in the past where the capitalists- little guys by musk standards today but the top hatted gods of their day, would build civic architecture, set up library foundations and so on as they entered the twilight of years and lets face it, still feared that god was real and they were going to burn without some good works. It wasn't all of them and no doubt my mind is exaggerating how many did engage in these 'giving back' soul saving exercises. It comes to mind when I see todays billionaires entirely untroubled by the thoughts of more than the most token philanthropist stunts. Bezos is building giant clock to last 10,00 years in the desert somewhere. Pipe dreams of mars and neural laces while the world boils.

oh absoloutly. huge social institutions built by them. loads of social housing in london for example built by philanthropy. maybe all a tax dodge or somethign, but so what, any port in a storm.

you will get these freaks, and its not just the tech bros, talking mroe passionatly about their gym and wellness regimes (see jeff benzo's interview on Lex Friedmen (if you can stomach it)) than they do any social enterprise that might actually alleviate folk out dire circumstances. and yes i do think the demise of religion plays into this somewhat. i suspect that the sidelining forever of the humanities instead of STEM is also part of this too. atomisation, narcissism, self improvement, GAINS - the ideology of neoliberalism, all the while folk think they are free of ideology lol. Science, bro. it's weird because being wealthy and having nice things doesn't necessarily negate actually givnig a shit and using surplus ridiculous wealth for flesh and bone social improvement. he could easily subsides say local shops in deprived areas. or build 1000 swimming pools for public use. or as you say 100 well run libraries in deprived areas. he probably thinks investing in start ups as charity, lol.

His account right now is mostly retweeting lies about immigration and while he doesn’t appear to have uttered the words ‘great replacement’, that’s certainly what he’s implying, which is rich, considering he himself is an immigrant. With eleven children.

A Brooklyn high school that housed nearly 2,000 migrants for one night during a powerful rainstorm received a bomb threat and multiple “hate calls,” the city’s top emergency management official said Wednesday.

The threats came amid a wave of outrage among some residents, Republican politicians and even the richest man in the world, Elon Musk, over the decision to house the migrants at James Madison High School in Marine Park after they were evacuated Tuesday afternoon from a nearby tent shelter at Floyd Bennett Field.

You know those photo collages which are something like "dog or pastry"?

Someone should do one of those with the Vegas loop and, y'know, a tunnel.

Actually, possibly more accurately, it looks like cars boarding another vehicle like a ferry or train.

Don’t get it. What’s going on please?

The idea of a hyperloop: A depressurised tube allows a (internally pressurised) cabin vehicle to move at extremely high speeds through the tube, moving people between destinations faster than a plane or train could. (edit: it's not really technically feasible to do this for many reasons)
The reality of the vegas "hyperloop": A tunnel in which tesla taxis drive, which has no space to turn around or emergency exits or anything like that in the case of problems, and is obviously no more efficient than a road... but is more expensive... not sure about dangerous since there's almost no way for cars to crash into each other but tunnels usually have certain safety features for good reason...

AKA a private road for very rich people...

Hyperloop and Loop are different. The former is the supersonic pod in an evacuated tube, intended to compete with high speed trains. The latter is hundreds of electric cars in a network of tunnels, intended to compete with subways.

Both are shit, but they're different kinds of shit.
