Iran

Seems the US has not admitted to a cyber attack against Iran, they're boasting about it.
However, the attack was probably as stupid as it was unjustified as it's warned the Iranians they can do it, and whoever supplied the weapons systems is also alerted to US capabilities.

US 'launched cyber-attack on Iran weapons systems'

The US launched a cyber-attack on Iranian weapons systems on Thursday as President Trump pulled out of air strikes on the country, US reports say.

The cyber-attack disabled computer systems controlling rocket and missile launchers, the Washington Post said.

It was in retaliation for the shooting down of a US drone as well as attacks on oil tankers that the US has blamed Iran for, the New York Times said.

If I was the Iranians, this would just push me into getting a nuke. A country thousands of miles away coming to bully me in my own back yard, I would want to do something about it.

It’s gone a bit macho here. Who will blink first ? Tramp is stirring the region with a long spoon but is he up to a possibly bloody conflict

i'm not convinced that its all going to blow up - this is all pretty much business as usual, there are 'confrontations' between commercial shipping, the various western navies operating in the Gulf, and the IIRG most weeks, and there have been those confrontations for decades. it ebbs and flows, and sometimes the manner of particular confrontations is a bit spicier than in others, but it drops off again.

that, of course, doesn't mean it can't or won't happen, but little has actually changed from previous episodes in which neither side felt the need to go to war.

No Iranian oilsales is different.

Luckily a war with Iran has remained speculation and nothing more for over a decade. Hopefully the conflict between Iran and the West will somehow be defused and the Iranians will be left to construct their own road to freedom and justice. But for all eventualities, some certainties can be stated:

a) Iranian control over Iranian resources is of paramount importance for Iranian social progress. In this regard the actual achievements of the 1979 revolution must be defended.

b) The Iranian working class has learnt that a national bourgeoisie is not much better than a comprador one, if it is better at all. Otherwise stated: anti imperialism is a necessary condition of emancipatory politics in the periphery but it is never sufficient: the moment imperialism is defeated a thousand new issues arise.

c) In the case of a military attack against Iran the restitution of the Islamic Republic can never be a goal; only the restitution of sovereignty can. The ongoing victimisation of Iran must not tempt an anti war movement in the West and other parts of the world to fall into the trap of minimising the human rights abuses of the Islamic Republic, for these are terrible. Under all conditions, solidarity should be directed to none other than the masses of ordinary working Iranians.

An invasion of Iran would be devastating. How it would affect the seeds and well springs of democracy, if they survive at all, one cannot know. But one thing is for certain. Unlike the B-52s, F-16s and bunker busting bombs that fall from the sky, the democracy of labour grows from below.

Iran has joined Cuba in the elite club of giving america an eternal hateboner that they can do little about.
Even commie china or vietnam who defeated them has reached that status yet.

North Korea and Venuzelia have tried but the orange one shook hands with the fat one knocking NK out of the running maduros probably not going to last much longer.

I note the UK are taking the opportunity to highlight their (and Europes) differences with the USA over this, going on about how its was the destination (Syria) that was the problem, not the source (Iran).

The EU has even setup mechanisms to allow trade with Iran to continue despite US sanctions, but I think companies are nervous about using it in case the USA comes down hard on them for sanctions-busting.

And a lot of Irans recent threats and acts seen to be aimed at extracting some kind of economic compensation from the EU, very much including the nuclear deal breaches.

For these and many other reasons, Iran continues to be a poor fit for the standard 'shit we are beating the war drum' narrative that tempts some people on this thread.

There are 23 seafarers aboard. There have been no reported injuries and their safety is of primary concern to both owners and managers. The priority of both vessel owner Stena Bulk and ship manager Northern Marine Management is the safety and welfare of the crew.

Northern Marine Management has not been able to establish contact directly with the vessel since it was notified of the incident at approximately 1600 Today, 19th July 2019.

We are in close contact with UK government authorities.

I cant say I'm surprised, since although Iran will sometimes make empty threats they do like a lot of their threats to have teeth.

I dont have any predictions about how the UK will respond.
