Hong Kong: what next?

The, elected, Hong Kong University Students Union leaders have all resigned (this follows the same at Chinese University of HK, Polytechnic University and others at the 8 public universities in HK). No matter, they will be replaced by Patriots.

And it looks like the long-standing Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China, which has organised the 4th of June candlelight vigil in Victoria Park every year since 1989, is disintigrating too. It's let all its staff go and half of the executive committee has resigned (and the other half are in prison).

Happy days!

I think it's relevant at this point to highlight - and emphasise - that treelover, in starting this thread almost exactly two years ago in the midst of the protests, posed the question; "Hong Kong: What Next?"

And that Rimbaud, with usual eloquence and prescience, presented in November 2019 the quandary and conundrum facing those brave young people who understood that they were taking a last stand at the front line of global Freedom; prepared to sacrifice everything, to put their bodies, their very existence, on the line in the face of overwhelming, insurmountable power, in order to alert others to the alarming danger that is coming to the world - all too soon.
More than TEN THOUSAND of them are currently under arrest. And hundreds already jailed.

(Re-read your Lord Of The Rings peeps!)

Rimbaud: November 2019 ...

"The CCP today, due to its abuse of big data and surveillance technologies, is a threat to civilisation like nothing since the Nazis ... can we get some perspective here - in the Mainland NOBODY can disagree, people who dare to face severe consequences, and that's what the extradition law would have brought to HK. Beijing supporters can still rally in HK, and post things online, and have pro-Beijing media, something that will be denied everyone else if these protests do not succeed."

Well, as it happens, under the cover of Covid-19 ...

The protests, obviously, did not succeed. And the Extradition Law was superseded by the all encompassing, ill defined, nebulous, Mainland-imposed National Security Law.

And now we are lost. The frontline is gone. The dam is burst. The temple is crumbled in ruins. Freedom has fallen.

And the rest is history foretold.

treelover's question has been answered.

Over to you now, you good people ...

Wake the fuck up!

And please, Please, PLEASE, invest just four and a half minutes with your ears and your heart and immerse yourself into this. It's beautiful, haunting and prescient ...

And please remember ... Be nice to each other.

Blessings all. I love you. Bed for me.

:)

There's a crack in the ice and it's coming after me
Should I wait and not blink, or should I run and get away
But every will would need a force
And once again there will be another way out, just like every time
So I go drowning and see what's coming next

I could go and have a drink with you, but I'm too bored
Oh, it could be nice but that's not what I'm looking for, what you're looking for
So why not leave it all behind?
Well, it seems so draining just to think about it anyway
So I keep going and leave it all untouched

I'm under control
I am well sedated and permanently sick
I'm under control
I don't care too much if I win or if I get tricked
I ran out of passion, but carry the weight
'til the end when I bury myself
Still under control, I'm taking it all from you

I go waste your time like any other day
Seems I look forsaken, and I'll be either way
And when I'm laughing it's my fault
And when I say that all these pictures on the wall are greyish anyway
I didn't mean it, they're only black and white

And here, on a slight tangent, is a tale from our sister city, Macau. A Portugese colony for over 450 years. Back in the early 1990's, I was a frequent visitor (had clients there and spent at least a few days a month for three years). It was a quiet, quaint little enclave, riddled with narrow, meandering cobbled streets dotted with tiny Chinese antique shops, superb, truly-fusion cuisine in little, family owned restaurants and small quirky pubs and bars. With beautiful, historical architecture and a warm, lovely people - and all at one third of the prices of HK - I truly adored the place.

I was there for Macau's handover on 19th December 1999 - and then an after midnight dinner at Fernando's that lasted the night and ran on into a long, still-boozy brunch before the late afternoon ferry back home. Ahhhh, memories, I salute you Fernando!

Macau is tiny compared to HK, < 650,000 population today (and fewer than 500K when I was a regular). It has always been far more "mainlandised" and Pro-CCP than HK and since liberalising the casino sector (around 2001 IIRC,) has been swathed by tens of millions of wealthy mainland gamblers every year. It's thoroughly corrupt and serves as a money laundering mecca for CCP officials, leading to one of the highest per capita GDP's on the planet (and, of course, one of the highest gini coefficients too!)

Aaaaaanyway ... Macau's post-handover Basic Law, is less liberal than even HK's - there was never any chance of genuine democracy there and, over the years, its LegCo has had, at most, two pro-democrats elected - usually one.

So, if anyone is still under any illusion that the HK protests necessitated the crackdown currently decimating HK, please note that on Friday last week, Macau disqualified ALL twenty one (21) of the pro-democracy candidates preparing to stand in the upcoming election. Banned from participating. Every. Last. One. For "disloyalty".

Fascism cares not whether you riot or just meekly wave a cardboard placard. It brooks no dissent whatsoever. Eventually, sooner or later, its coming for YOU.

(Edit: To try and tidy up a bit - a hopeless task!)

A reminder, for those interested, that the Hong Kong Free Press (hongkongfp.com) remains, at least for now, a last (the only?) bastion of reliable English language Hong Kong news. It's a micro-sized, locally based source that's been around for the last decade. Great owners, editors and contributors. I've known most of them well, for a long time. They are good people. Honest. Trustworthy. Contributors and opinion pieces are always thoughtful; well considered.

Another superb, locally-based, source for in-depth analysis is academic Dr. Suzanne Pepper. In my view, one of the most astute Hong Kong political commentators over the last three decades.

Her site is here, though I now fear it may recently have been compromised by the CCP. Tread carefully.

Her contributions to the HKFP (including today) may be found here.

And finally ...

A superb, well researched, in-depth long read from todays HKFP from Selina Cheng.

If I was Headlining it, it would be ...

"Wikipedia's Wumao Wars - Re-Writing history."

It must be very difficult for most people to fully comprehend the true scale of the breadth and depth of the CCP propaganda machine online. LITERALLY hundreds of thousands - if not a million and more - of paid, full time, posters across all media, everywhere on the planet. And many millions more young (brainwashed,) volunteers, shaping the narrative. Be careful what you read!

(Edit: Read to the end. They are using their Wiki Admin powers to doxx Hong Kong Wiki contributors. It's fucking chilling.)

Stay safe peeps. Look after each other.

Blessings.

Oh! And never mind The Big Apple ...

Let's not forget, ever, "Hemlock" at The Big Lychee: "Watching the sun set, little by little, on Asia's greatest city" in a daily blog since 1999 (with a side issue of the original Hemlock's Diaries - terminated in the mid 2000's but still there if you look).

A quaint, still-daily, literary take from an old colonial type. A sweetly intelligent, highly comical, entirely satirical, bitterly cynical, beautifully lyrical, deeply informed, widely referenced account (with all of about twenty regular readers!).

It's pure poetry and hugely insightful. One of the best of the best. Entertainment of the highest order.

Please do dip into it daily. Or even better, pop back a decade and read forward (it'll take you a few weeks). Whimsically cataloging events with a truly unique voice. A genius of his time.

Pure poetry.

G'night all. Be nice to each other.

:)

The excellent Holmes Chan is documenting the first ever NSL trial in HK, in English in Stand News, where Tong Ying-Kit is charged with terrorism and inciting secession for allegedly colliding his motorcycle with a group of police officers, while flying a "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times" flag from the back of his bike. If convicted on either charge, he faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Below is day eight of proceedings (yesterday), links for days one - seven are at the bottom of that page. Scheduled for 15 days, the defendant's barristers are expected to start presenting their case in a day or two. Worth following. WORTH FOLLOWING!

(Edit: For the first time in @ 138 years, a defendant in the High Court has been denied a jury trial. The trial is being heard by three "NSL judges", selected from a pool of "NSL judges" that was hand picked by the Chief Executive, Carrie Lam. The reason for no jury cited by Secretary for Justice, Teresa Cheng, was that any jurors, or their families, may be subjected to harassment. There is wide public suspicion, however, that the real reason is that Cheng would be very hard pressed to assemble any jury that would be willing to convict on the charges, as they stand.)

Day twelve ...

Fucking, fucking, fucking hell!

"I don't know what you mean by 'glory,' " Alice said.

Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. "Of course you don't—till I tell you. I meant 'there's a nice knock-down argument for you!'"

"But 'glory' doesn't mean 'a nice knock-down argument'," Alice objected.

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less."

"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."

"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master—that's all."

Fuck me! And then fuck me again! What kind of madness is this? For fuck sake!

Kafka knew absolutely fucking nothing and Hitler and Mussolini were fucking amateurs! (Although Orwell had some inkling.)

Lewis Carroll, on the other hand, in his opium-induced riddled fantasies, seemed to have an extraordinary perspicuity into the future.

CCP, please meet The Looking Glass. The Looking Glass, please meet the CCP.

Fuck me. No wonder I'm verging on suicide. Really? What kind of fucking madness is this?

Fuck you Xi! Fuck you CCP! Fuck the whole fucking world! Fuck you!

What a fucking mess!

Fucking insanity!

Fuck the world!

Be water!

A very brief moment. A very brief smile.

I don't watch sports (I kinda just do politics,) but came across this on the Niao Collective's Twitter feed (and must say that @Wimbledon's feed is very well done).

(AND she's wearing a mask.)

You go girl!

You go Taiwan!

Once the CCP come across it, I'm sure a Panda Tantrum will ensue. Gird your loins Wimbledon.

And, finally, before bed, as a barbed message to Emperor-For-Life, Chairman Xi, from the people of Hong Kong ... If only there were a fucking border!

(And, also, as a tribute to my brother, a fellow villager and constant hand-in-hand cosmic, Friday night, traveler. The East German, half-Arab, deep and perpetual Nihilist and mental psychic worshiper of the fathoms of Nautilus and ... Fuck me! ... an enormously talented Master Watchmaker. [I'll see you on Friday, my weird friend.])

Holy Moses, We have been fucking deceived!

Holy Moses I have been removed
I have seen the specter he has been here too
Distant cousin from down the line
Brand of people who ain't my kind
Holy Moses I have been removed

Holy Moses I have been deceived
Now the wind has changed direction and I'll have to leave
Won't you please excuse my frankness but it's not my cup of tea
Holy Moses I have been deceived

I'm going back to the border
Where my affairs, my affairs ain't abused
I can't take any more bad water
I've been poisoned from my head down to my shoes

Holy Moses I have been deceived
Holy Moses let us live in peace
Let us strive to find a way to make all hatred cease
There's a man over there what's his color I don't care
He's my brother let us live in peace
He's my brother let us live in peace
He's my brother let us live in peace

Night, good Urban peeps. Rest well. And remember ... Be nice to each other.

Love you.

Remember the HKU Student Union leaders, who apologised, retracted their commiserations (for the guy that stabbed the cop and then committed suicide,) and then resigned?

Well, Carrie Lam, the CE, mused at a press conference a couple of days ago, that perhaps the NSL Police should still go after them for "inciting terrorism".

Aaaand, about an hour ago ...

This is a good Bloomberg piece.

One detail it omits is that this was not exactly an ordinary hotpot dinner that a family might enjoy for @ ten or twelve quid a head.

These senior security officials were being "entertained" by a HK-based, senior executive of one of the mainland's biggest property developers and the cost of the meal was reported to be GBP 400:00 per head, just for the food. Nice, eh?

This documentary is currently showing at the Cannes Film Festival.

The local filmmaker, Kiwi Chow, is currently cowering under his bed (I really hope he's gonna be okay, but ... )
