Guardsman wears turban

to be strictly fair to the septics, apart from a few egregious examples, the rate of blue-on-blue that the US is responsible for is mainly because they provide the overwhelming proportion of CAS. they do most of it, so when it goes wrong they are more likely to be holding the smoking bomb rail than anyone else.

the less well visited side of the coin is the dangers faced by ground units because aircraft (or ground based fires) won't engage, or take so long to engage, due to procedures put in place to get it right/avoid bad headlines*.

US soldiers are actually only the number four cause of shooting-related deaths of Americans behind cops, skinny guys who never had much luck with women and toddlers who found mommie's sunday best .44 in the cutlery drawer.

in any of the more quality Regiments its a standing order that if two Officers find themselves wearing the same uniform, the junior is to return to the Mess and get changed.

in the old days it was dayglo tropics, a battered and sun-bleached windproof smock, jungle boots in the summer and Yeti gaiters in the winter, 38 pattern water bottle pouches on the belt-kit and the oldest bergen you could lay your hands on. old is ally, and ally saves lives.
It was 44 pattern pouches may well have resembled that man:facepalm:. Saw a re-enactor dressed like that. Looked really stupid.
What we need is kevlar turbans.
Has been some research into that nothing available yet.
I don't like seeing soldiers in turbans as for years the only Sikh I saw was an officer. So see turban salute. Now work with Sikhs of all ranks so have to fight the urge to automatically salute when ever I see one.

Busbys aren't as big as bearskins

A friend of mine was in a Warrior that got shot up by American aircraft in GW1 He bore the pilots no ill will for the mistake but was pissed off he didn’t get so much as a letter or card saying sorry.

In the GW1 Warrior/AGM-65 blue-on-blue the stories of the British FAC and the A-10 directly contradicted each other. Only the three of them know exactly what happened and who is culpable...

That’s the one...

Bearskins take an incredible amount of maintenance for a hat but the Guards like the whole CDO of it CDO like OCD but with the letters in the correct Order:D.
The MOD spent quite a bit of money and time in researching synthetic replacements gave all the research to the Fashion Designer Viviene Westwood who was leading a campaign to save the bears that the Canadian government shoot anywhere:confused:.
The Guards make the rest of the army seem sane most of the rest of the army goes away from any contact with them with a puzzled expression did that really happen. other ranks wearing shirts and ties for a night out instead of going to court:hmm: and their officers are even stranger and they just have ranks they make up like corporal of the horse ????? and coronet for officers:confused:

Explain how any of this affects anyone's actual life and why they should care.

Controversial I know but I reckon society could get along just fine without any of these silly tosspots getting paid top dollar in public money to prance about like, well like silly tosspots. If they love prancing about so much they can do it for fucking free and get a real job in the meantime like everyone else.

Not particularly controversial here

What's worse - wearing stupid headgear for patriotic, imperialist reasons, or wearing stupid headgear because your particular sky pixie told you to?

Why this crap comparason? Why does either have to be worse?

FWIW, turbans, as headgear go are pretty nice IMO and are more than just religious items. They have cultural/practical uses like lots of other hair wrapping styles.

Do they get paid top dollar? I thought they weren't paid very much (but were compensated in board, lodgings, subsidised beer and soggu biscuits).

AFAIK Sikhs don't wear turbans because a "sky pixie" told them to, but as part of a process in the early history of Sikhism where the gurus set out spiritual practices that defined them, including in-group markers that helped make it such a vibrant and resilient faith in a fairly hostile setting. So not cold science either but a definite social-historical process that has its own logic.

I expect the Queen is utterly bored of the whole thing.
Thing is they used to show off the army. Ooh look how impressive it is.

But we do this stupid tradition ting of don't change anything. Its tradition to wear the head armour that was the technological cutting edge 400 years ago instead of the cutting edge arms and weapons of today.

Modern Trooping the colour should be space marines with turbo swords and phase plasma rifles (in the 20 gigawatt range) riding hovertanks.

Then it would be worth watching.

I'm sure its still relevant as a statement of cultural identity and solidarity for Sikh communities here in the UK as well. As anyone who knows any Sikhs will be aware, the turban is not a way for people to set themselves apart from those around them.
