Germany v Algeria (Knockout Stage) Monday 30th June 2014

Exciting game. Glad it didn't go to penalties but a bit sad to see Algeria go out.

Looking forward to Germany France.

I missed two goals too: the recording ended after one.

How is it they can go 90 minutes without scoring, then suddenly it's raining goals?

I thought this game was boring. Watching it, I'm thinking, how can they make this more exciting?

Maybe one or two less players per side would open up more scoring opportunities. There's too many people on that field.

And just after the half, some Algerian player goes down. It's close to the sideline, and there's a mike nearby. You can hear him screaming.

One of the most in-shape people on the planet gets hit in the leg, falls down, and begins screaming.

Sad to see Algeria go out, I wondered if any if them were fasting for Ramadan when the commentator was going on about Germany having better legs at the end of the second half

If you thought this game was boring, you should probably just accept that soccer isn't your sport.

As for your suggestion for fewer players, it's a perfect example of World Cup Syndrome. Every four years, the World Cup brings out all the "experts" who never watch the game, but who are, nevertheless, absolutely sure that they know what needs to be done to fix it. Of course, the fact that it's literally the most popular spectator sport on the whole planet never shakes the absolute confidence of these people that their criticisms are valid.

Americans are usually the worst for this, but there's a few in every country.

I'm not absolutely sure, I'm not an expert by any means; but I have a few ideas, so: what the hell?

I've watched a game per day during the world cup, and have enjoyed the majority of them. I found this one boring; and was perplexed by the Netherlands/Mexico game.

You may have watched the game a lot, played it, etc etc; but you don't own the game.

I never suggested that i own it.

I was merely suggesting that you consider the possibility that a sport that is watched and followed avidly by hundreds of millions of people on a regular basis might not necessarily benefit from the blinding insights provided by a few people who happen to switch on their TVs for a game or two every four years.

I haven't come across many things that can't be improved upon, and considering the many discussions on the boards about diving, officiating, FIFA, etc, it would seem that lots of people believe that there is room for improvement.

And yet you addressed none of those issues. Instead, you complained that there wasn't enough scoring, and suggested that the number of players on the field needs to be reduced. I can guarantee you that virtually no real fans of the sport will agree with you about that issue.

The commentary also mentioned they'd got special dispensation from the Immam in Chief back home to leave off some fasting while they were at the WC.

I'm a fair-weather-WC-watcher and I don't think anything needs changing :D That was a fantastic lively match with loads of object lessons in how it's done. The Algerian goalie was tip-top and you couldn't imagine anything getting passed him. Until it did

I can't see how you weren't entertained by that! Over the course of 120 minutes there were 40 shots at goal, it was played at a high pace and right to the end Germany were fluffing chances and Algeria threatening to score on the counter-attack.

You do recognize that what's being discussed is... a game? A pastime.

That might be part of it. Algeria seemed to be outplaying Germany, Germany missed a bunch of chances... yet Germany won the game.

Well, not sure what your definition of "outplaying" is, but I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that Algeria, impressive as they were, outplayed Germany. The Algerian keeper Rais M'Bohli was their man of the match (he made 20 saves, would you believe?) and with a little bit more luck/care in front of goal Germany would've won comfortably in the end.

For me that kind of game is entertaining, firstly because it could've gone either way and it wouldn't have been an injustice to either team (although one of the great things about football is you can absolutely batter the other team, not score, then lose the game to the other teams only attack) and secondly because goals are hard to come by that adds to the sense of drama every time a goal becomes likely ...

It might just be that I watched the recorded game when I got home from work, and I was cranky and tired. I might even have dozed off for a bit. But the play just didn't seem as crisp and right on as it has been in some other games. The Algerian goalie in the first half, kept knocking away balls that it seemed he should have been catching.

I don't see how anyone can think Algeria were the better team or deserved to win. Germany had twice as much possession, three times as many attempts at goal...and the ones I saw were better chances than Algeria's...and did actually score more often as well. If they had a proper centre-forward they would've had at least 4. Schweinsteiger, Muller and Schurrle were all over them in the 2nd half. Admittedly, I missed most of the 1st half.

Algeria were very good (and I would've quite liked to see them play France) but the Germans are just different class.

Johnny Every heard of the NASL? The America "Soccer" league in the 70s? They issued loads of the new rules to "fix" the game, like the golden goal so games never had draws, changing the offside rule, and the points system (awarding extra points per goal scored). It flopped.

Most the suggestions about changes to the game are simple practical steps like implementing hawkeye technology at goal line, a 4th official with access to video playback as it is so successful in rugby, and stringing up the executive council of FIFA from Lamp posts like the scum bags they are.

Y'know simple practical steps to improve the game.

The Germans weren't terribly crisp first half as the Algerians were swarming all over them!

Anyway, it certainly fit my criteria of an excellent game. :)

what they need is more goals so they can have music and a quick ad break right?

If you've found the majority of games entertaining I'd say football is a pretty compelling sport to watch and does not need tinkering at all, then. Few sports, if any at all, can claim or pretend all their matches will be compelling to watch. In fact with some of them (I'm looking at you, baseball), just about every single match played is indescribably boring.

Baseball is boring to the uninitiated, I think. Bit like cricket - there's a lot more going on than immediately meets the eye of a casual observer.
