Netherlands v Mexico (Knockout Stage) Sunday 29th June 2014

Fuck!

The Dutch will win despite being the clearly inferior team for about 88 minutes out of the 90.

That Robben's a diving cunt innit? Was a penalty but he really made a meal of it but blatantly dived at the start of the second half in the box. I feel for the Mexicans but I'm kinda glad the Dutch went through as I think they're long overdue for a world cup.

Should have had a penalty at the end of the first half though.

Because of the current advantage rule, "making the most of it" is not the same as diving. If Robben carries on and doesn't make anything of it because he's been put off his stride by the contact, the defender has basically got away with committing a foul, in the penalty area, which is a penalty.

Actually that replay seems he made sure his foot contact. Just saw the first half one and yeah definite pen. What a diving cunt though.

Yeah I know but it still irks me to see it. Robben's given 90s era Klinsman a run for his money in this world cup.

Terrific comeback from Holland. The ref couldn't keep on denying Robben, and they both knew it. Still, that was a pressure pen against the best keeper in the competition, and Huntelaar took it brilliantly.

Actually no.
Well, at least 70 minutes. The Dutch improved after the Mexican goal, but were still patchy. Some good phases; some crap. Mexico were the better team today.

Yeah, Robben made a big diving meal of it, but until referees show a willingness to award penalties even when the attacker manages to stay on his feet, players are going to keep going down in the box.

Tom Daley wouldn't have bettered that and I actually don't think it was penalty, Robben had already lost the ball, he played for the penalty, second out and out penalty dive by Robben during the game. Cheating cunt should be banned for four months.

Funny thing is both Mexico and Holland should have had a genuine penalty. The Dutch were very lucky to win this.

Pretty much. not saying it would be an easy call, but it's one of the reasons there's so much diving anywhere on the pitch. It's not faking, it's drawing attention to.

Fair point actually. You do, sometimes, see players ride challenges and don't go down. Maybe the ref should play the advantage and if nothing comes off it give a penalty? They can do that with free kicks where advantage is played can't they?

Wasn't a dive and there was contact, but that cut was all about digging a penalty. A defender with the experience of Rafa should have known better than to do that.

Shame to end it like that. It WAS a penalty and thems the rules of the game. Robben did milk it to make the point which is a shame. It was not a goalscoring opportunity but in the penalty area so not controversial, just a poor part of the game.
