Gaza under attack yet again.

The Washington Post has a similar breakdown of civilian casualties, which must be a first for a major American newspaper.

The proliferation of videos and images via social media is making it impossible for editors to ignore the human cost of Israel's actions. In previous assaults, the deaths were just a number and the public wouldn't be exposed to the reality if the media didn't show it. Today, their reporting can't ignore what their readers already know.

(I am not suggesting that there has been some sort of conspiracy to prevent a distorted picture, but rather that the slick Israeli PR machine was filling the information void created by restricted access to Gaza. Information being sent out by the people living there is starting to correct the imbalance.)

or he would be if he didn't have previous form for being an anti-Semite.

Once, he did say "the Jews" when he meant (he later claimed) "the State of Israel".

But it seems that most of the outrage directed at him makes use of the Zionist* equation that to deny the "right to exist" of the State of Israel is to be anti-Semitic.

* In the strict sense, of course.

For the first time Hasbara seems to be losing the media war. Probably the sheer pervasiveness of social media and the falling cost of the relative technology is working against them long term.

I saw this but am not sure what this site is exactly: http://mondoweiss.net/2014/07/telegenic-israels-crumbling.html

‘Telegenically Dead’: Israel’s crumbling media war

they've printed some really dodgy stuff at times but sometimes have good stuff on there.

‘Telegenically Dead’: Israel’s crumbling media war

Great article and a source for positivity.

When you need to write a fucking manual on how to justify chucking artillery shells at kids you know you're in the wrong.

The Israeli Ministry of Tourism is not happy.
"It is devastating us economically," said Leon Avigad, the developer of Brown Hotels, a small collection of boutique hotels in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. "We are losing tons of money by the minute. The entire profit from the summer is wiped out."

One of the many casualties of the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been Israel’s booming tourism business, which can account for as much as six percent of the nation’s gross domestic product.

"Obviously the past two weeks has caused fewer visits," said Geoffrey Weill, a spokesman for the Tourism Ministry. "Had the year continued normally we would have seen that growth. That will obviously be affected now."

wow you don't say :hmm:

Hamas, who can generally be relied upon to select the worse possible option at any juncture, are taking the hit from Sisi for being BFF with the Muslim brotherhood.

That's a bit harsh on Hamas, for all their failings they have done more on a social welfare level for their citizens than the Palestinian Authority does. What do you expect them to do, roll over and just take it?

I can't stop thinking about these groups of british people going off to fight for Israel. it worries me that I may have met people who might have done this, or know people who have. it's really upsetting me :(

Leonard Cohen fought in the IDF during the 1973 war.

Leonard Cohen fought in the IDF during the 1973 war.

This is not to excuse it but it was a very, very different situation back then in terms of popular opinion. When my dad was at school and Israel fought the wars in 1967 and 1973 he told me that that was the first time in his life that he felt proud to be Jewish because Israel were winning wars within a matter of days with very powerful-seeming opponents. :(

An Israeli academic has claimed that raping wives and mothers of Palestinian Hamas militants is the only thing that could deter further terrorist attacks.

The remarks by renowned Middle East scholar Mordechai Kedar of Bar-Ilan University were made three weeks ago after the grim discovery of the bodies of the three kidnapped Israeli teenagers, but the recording was published online (in Hebrew) on Monday.

"The only thing that could deter a suicide bomber is knowing that if caught, his sister or his mother would be raped," said Kedar on Israel Radio Bet

"It sounds very bad, but that's the Middle East," he continued. "You have to understand the culture in which we live. The only thing that deters [Hamas leaders] is a threat to the connection between their heads and their shoulders."

To the shocked radio presenter who said that "we cannot take such steps, of course", Kedar replied:

"I'm not talking about what we should or shouldn't do. I'm talking about the facts. The only thing that deters a suicide bomber is the knowledge that if he pulls the trigger or blows himself up, his sister will be raped. That's all. That's the only thing that will bring him back home, in order to preserve his sister's honor."

Kedar served for 25 years in the military intelligence, where he specialised in Islamic groups. He is currently a researcher at the right-wing Begin-Sadat Centre for Strategic Studies of Bar Ilan but previously worked for a shadowy organisation, the Israel Academia Monitor, which fights left-leaning academic professors.
