Vettel to sign for Racing Point (Aston Martin)
Sebastian Vettel will sign a multi-year contract at the next race at Spa-Francorchamps. Citing sources, Kronen Zeitung newspaper claims that despite the most recent speculation to the contrary, the German will be an Aston Martin driver from 2021. However, speculation continues to swirl around the more immediate future of the struggling Ferrari driver. Vettel is notably struggling not only to drive his 2020 car, but his relationship with the Maranello team has also clearly failed.

During qualifying, and despite at least 20 messages from his engineer, the quadruple world champion said nothing at all on the radio in Barcelona. It has sparked speculation that Kimi Raikkonen or Nico Hulkenberg are being lined up to immediately replace the 33-year-old. “No, absolutely not,” Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto told Bild am Sonntag newspaper. Regardless of the choices we have made about the future, he is part of the Ferrari family and we trust him as a driver and as a person. “That’s why we would never make such a decision.”

Ferrari changed Vettel’s chassis after Silverstone, but there have even been claims that the Italian team is deliberately sabotaging him in order to make Charles Leclerc look better. “My answer to that is very simple: that is completely wrong,” Binotto insisted. “First of all, we need Sebastian and his talent. We need him for our success. So exactly the opposite is the case,” said the Italian. “We are helping him wherever we can. We stand by Sebastian, just as he stands by Ferrari and our whole team. Together, we will try to find out what’s going on with his performance at the moment.”

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport it would be a contract of about 15 million dollars a year. A significant salary for a driver on a midfield team. Newspapers in Mexico are reporting that Perez’s sponsors are willing to pay even more money for the Mexican to keep his seat. Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll both have long-term deals currently in place with Racing Point and, with Lance’s seat safe as his father, Lawrence, owns the team, it is Perez who would be the one to make way for Vettel. Perez appeared to be bracing himself for that distinct possibility. “It’s clear who would have to go,” Perez said “I’m a father too. I would certainly not kick my own son out of the house. But I can’t say much more about it. There are so many rumours swirling around at the moment. It doesn’t change anything for me. I have a contract.”

Not a huge surprise but to ignore the team on radio is shithousery by Vettel given the money he earns and his time with Fezza

Kimi OR Hulk are both good choices. Think I would prefer to see the Hulk getting a drive but Kimi is always a favourite.

No mention of Alonso? :D

I'd love to see Kimi back in a better car, but having seen Hulkenberg in the last couple of races he has earned the seat. Kimi can't, realistically, be far off retiring anyway.

Interesting that a couple of people have talked about a 1 stop, Pirelli have said that a 1 stop is "very marginal"so I'd be surprised if any team looking to win went for a one stop :hmm:

Swedish TV just put up a graphic illustrating what the gaps in qualifying times translate into in track distance. You gotta feel for Botty, getting beaten by such a tiny amount. He’s so close to matching Hamilton, but keeps losing out in tiny ways!

Getting a bit nervous :D hope the start/race is not a damp squib. Grid looks great and while the Merc/Max trio are likely to get the tea/medals I hope we get some overtaking and (dare I say) drama
