Which is fine, of course, format-wise. One of the (many) flaws of the format with 24 teams is that you can't guarantee that teams won't end up in the same half of the draw after the group stage. Shouldn't really meet again until the final.

Just remembered that Holland and the Soviet Union played each other in the group stage and the final in 1988. The Soviets won 1-0 in the group game but the Dutch won the final 2-0. Eight team tournament back then with the top two in the groups progressing to the semis

Just thinking about those eight team tournaments - in 1988, 32 teams entered the qualifying rounds. Compare that to 2020 when 55 teams started out on the road to Wembley in 2018

only happened twice. Italy lost to Argentina on penalties in 1990 (and Argentina then lost to West Germany in the final) - conceding one in that match in normal time.

Twice! That in itself is pretty bloody cool.
