Germany outplayed England today. That's it. It is the truth. You can't blame anyone but the players.

England were not up to the job. They've had everything laid at their feet, and they simply got outplayed.

You could blame the FA's non-take-up of the FIFA ball. You could blame Capello. You could blame the ref, or lack of camera technology. But the reality is that we don't have players who are good enough.

I think the wider defensive problem is that our centre halfs and most of the full-backs are thick, unused to doing anything other than hoofing or heading away - and when they have time on the ball passing it from one to the other then hoofing it up the park. Some time abroad or a change of english football culture is the only way that's going to change. And the second is never going to happen.

But we are always being told that Cashley is the best left back in the world.
