England v Platinum Stars

They are 13th in the South African top division.

Should I not be extremely alarmed about the fact that they've put together some nice passing moves in the middle of the park, and that England are playing a fair bit of pointless long ball?

The other teams in the tournament are going to have a seriously false sense of security...

Also, it's just English politeness - no need to humilate the old chaps

No you should realise it's little more then a training game, and everyone is just having a jog about.

England, esp under Copello (who looks like my dad, remember), do seem to play shit in friendlies, and considering that this one is so close to the real thing and is little more than a bit of PR, theres nothing too much to worry about.

Expect better passing, better tempo and an all round better game against the USA....when im at work FFS

That's what England always resort to after trying a passing game for 10 minutes. Hoof and hope.

you kind of want Motty's Demented ramblings if only to drown out those sodding horns

Look to be about the perfect opposition for this stage. Good work out, something different from the training ground. End of, really.

heskey has been his usual awful self imo. can't believe that he still gets away with it.....

Listen, I'm no fan of Heskey, but I'm amazed that some people can't see he does some good stuff. Several times in this game the ball has been played into feet, he's turned and brought into the game the midfield coming on.

He's not great, and if we had anyone better at holding up the ball he wouldnt get a sniff, but it does make me wonder how much about football do these Heskey haters know.

as has been noted elsewhere, a return of 5 goals from something like 50 games is pretty poor for a striker. hell, its pretty poor for a midfielder come to that.....

i'm sure everyone would prefer a striker partnering rooney who scored tons of goals, but since rooney obviously plays you have to go with the player who compliments him best. the team and rooney in particular score more goals when heskey plays.

I don't have the stats to hand, but take a look at how well the team does when he plays. Once again, it's not all about how many goals he scores if the teams scores more as a whole with him on the pitch.

correct.

sadly no matter how many times we say this i dont think people will listen. :)

I don't need the stats, I know we scored stack loads of goals in qualifying :)

I just think that people who constantly focus on Heskey don't know much about football.

It seems obvious to me that scoring goals will not be our problem, leaking goals at the other end is the concern. We have a suspect defence regardless of who plays up front.

Have to concur on that one. Aside from just being common sense (says a King Kevolite  ) it's what seems to be said by most people in the know. You need a strong defence to allow the rest of the team to do their thing.

You won't win anything with a crap defence ;)

indeed, we seem to have been conceding goals - especially from set pieces - for years now. you can rest assured that the USA will know all about this and see it as their best chance to score against us.
