Doctor Who 2023

You can really see the Disney money in this one! Enjoyed it, good old battle of wits set up with a bit of existential dread thrown in.

Also, dudebros losing it on social media because there was a cameo of Isaac Newton played by an actor with Indian heritage.:D
I didn't care about who played Newton, but the scene was pointless idiocy. It particularly stands out because the rest of the episode was so good. Besides, Tom Baker already said he gave Newton the idea by dropping an apple on his head. :)

The doctor was already at the fire of london (the end of the visitation). Isn't that where he lost his sonic screwdriver?
Good enough mystery jaunt. The cooler looking practical effects and better CGI was ruined by shit and obvious CGI which they could have just done without. I loved the long arms, that was old school who creepy and really freaked my daughter out.
Fuck CGI.

Tucked away in a little alley? They were right slap bang in the middle of camden market FFS.

A decent enough episode. I would have preferred a smaller more practically based set an FX. I also think (and always have) that 30 min eps with cliffhangers (as per the old days) would be better. Still, an interesting enough cliffhanger for the next one, even if it is a totally new story.

Final note. I thought they had only filmed Cribbins indoors. I would be interested to know how much they had to rewrite and edit around his missing performance.

I've been thinking about Isaac Newton and 'Mavity' , I have a feeling there may be more to this than re-casting (to annoy some folk) and a cheap throw away joke.

Donna said 'Mavity' later in the episode and the Doctor corrected her with 'gravity'.

Im wondering if that along with Doc 10's face coming back that they might be in the wrong universe or we are watching a different universe.

I could be well over thinking things and its all bollocks though :D

I took that as something that would be significant later.
Donna says "Gravity of the situation" but Newton misheard her and thinks Mavity is a nice word and obviously goes on to do his thing. They changed the course of time and now Gravity is Mavity and Donna never knew of it ever being anything different.
They broke a few rules here in writing about time travel. Like in back to the future where separate timelines are created in the second film but in the first film a change make marty actually start to vanish.
Donna only knowing 'mavity' is the paradox one timeline version (where she wouldn't have said gravity to newton for him to mishear - so that didn't happen) but also as the doctor knows 'gravity' it's a split timeline.

Doctor who resolves things pretty quickly these days so it's probably going to be something to do with all hell breaking loose back in Donnas own time.

I was miffed by the Newton scene at the start, it seemed pointless, it was totally disconnected with the rest of the episode, and like ruffneck23, I suspect it was a bit of a teaser for what may come up in a future episode.

You can really see the Disney money in this one!

You certainly can, trouble is they spent it on all the special effects, leaving no budget for additional actors during the main body of the episode. :D

But, they pulled it off with just the Doctor & Donna, it was gripping, exciting, a little scary, all very clever, and most enjoyable.

Obvioulsy

I would say the reverse. I thought the same as Cloo. You can't see the Disney money. The reason being that the CGI looks so utterly cheap. Practically home made. Not just the CGI doctor and Donna distortions, but the ship set itself looked 'spy kids 3' cheap.
Some of (but not all) the body deformity was cringe inducingly bad. I would have rather seen it cut around.

That'll always be the balance. We want the programme to always retain the shonkiness. Disney money will improve things, but like an irresponsible lottery winner, splurging on millions will only get you so far.

Well, that was great fun! Wish Tenant and Tate were back for an entire season, but so far - so very good.
As much as I don't like tates comedy, she works brilliantly on dr who. So much better than fawning young assistants. She is just the right mix of bravado, fear, brains and stupidity (as pointed out in this episode).

I hate it when they are in love / awe of the doctor.

Isn't everyone in love/awe of The Doctor?

Newton was WAY too personable. The man was famously taciturn and irascible. He wouldn’t be saying cheery hellos to maids. He was also obsessively puritan so wouldn’t be lightly invoking the devil. Shoving him in at the start for no reason and then getting him so wrong just seemed lazy.

That aside — Tennant and Tate really are something. It’s the quiet moments when they excel.

I think there's a reason for that (if you read up thread)

That was for me simply one of the very best episodes of the entire modern era. Fantastically good fun, clever script, and brilliant visuals to boot.

Mind bleach for far too many episodes of the last few years, and I ardently hope the template for the forthcoming season, writing-wise.

That was an absolutely outstanding episode and very well written. Didn't feel like the pace was all over the palce as it so often was under Moffat and Chibnalls. Tate and Tenant are fantastic, be sad to see them go...again.

On the plus side, it's triggering all the right people, currently melting down on Twitter. Apparently the first stage in white anglo saxon genocide is to hire someone vaguely not white to play Isaac Newton for two minutes

Why idi thy need additional actors?

Just watched this episode now. Both Mrs SFM and I thought it was Dr Who back to its best - getting back to what makes it great with scary concepts, proper threat and plot. Without wanting to sound reactionary, It’s better when it concentrates on terrifying the shit out of you without any of the distractions of the current age. Loved it 😎

ETA Bernard Cribbins’ appearance brought a tear to our eyes ❤️

Frankly, screw the canon purists. All I know is that this is orders of magnitude more enjoyable and fun than the last couple of Doctors.

I never usually bother with Doctor Who Confidential but just checked if there was one for this episode yet. And whereas there isn’t at the time of writing, I looked at other episodes available and discovered that somehow I missed a cracking-looking one in S4, namely the Agatha Christie one, which looks lush. Unexpected treat :)

Ah brillant, cheers. The search page on the iplayer didn’t suggest it at all- but then I started the search with ‘confidential’.

On a different subject, I was checking reviews online earlier and the Telegraph’s suggested the noticeably higher-than-usual visual effects are a result of the series having signed a lucrative distribution deal with Disney+.

I didn’t know that- surprising in a way as I can’t imagine the programme being that lucrative in overseas markets- but I guess so long as Disney doesn’t intend to interfere with the creative side of things and simply showers Davies with cash, it’s good news.

Dr Who has always been sold to dozens of other countries, and you can read more about the Disney here -

Though I bet they've not been complaining about Newton being played as a cheery young chap rather than the miserable bugger he reputedly was.

On the Doctor Who Unleashed thing they've shown how the Isaac Newton scene was filmed in "old" Doctor Who style for insurance purposes. They were in a green screen inside a carpark and yer man was in a park miles away.

I have just watched "Shada" on iPlayer (original Series 17), with Tom Baker, and written by Douglas Adams. It is quite good, but I think that the plot is little confused in places.

I thought from both it would end up not being Newton after all. The casting simultaneously annoys me a little and is great but the characterisation is really shit. I think it would be more accurate if he was angry about the Doctor fucking his tree up and started calling it mavity just to piss him off.
